  1. Hi Steve-- Here are additional details about S&S-23. You can update the announcement yourself or you can give permission to do so-- that's your choice! ========================================================================= BayArea 02 Swap & Show, 6 May 2023, Marina at Brisbane, California. Please preregister on Motorsportreg [http://msreg.com/BA02SS23]. Preregistration is $25 until 30 April while the on-site fee on 6 May will be $30. Graphic artist Kile Brekke designed our T-shirts and printed materials again this year and they look excellent! Please preregister early to help us plan. We will have a named bag for each preregistrant so our closing date is slightly earlier than some years to help us organize. Note— Swap & Show visitors are welcome! If you do not show your car or swap parts, there is No Fee for entry. But we encourage anyone with a BMW of our vintage to bring your car to display, no matter how beautiful your restoration or how mundane the dirt and rust on your daily driver (some photographers can make the rust and dirt very photogenic— check out photos from previous years!). Swap & Show does not judge your car so there will be no points for extra dirt, missing dirt, matching luggage or concours-ready shine. We smile at all BMW's, and photographs or videos are welcome (but NO drones over cars)! Larry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  2. Hi-- Just a comment, we will be at our usual location on the North end of the Brisbane Marina (NOT in Uptown Brisbane as shown on the first posted map but close to the fishing pier and not far from Dock-6). If you set your GPS, 400 Sierra Point Parkway is for the Harbormaster office and 500 Sierra Point Parkway is the yacht club. An even closer address is 9000 Marina Drive, Brisbane 94005 which Bing Maps thinks is nearer to the North parking lot in the Marina.

Bay Area 02 Not the 49-Mile Drive 2022

Images taken at Not the 49-Mile Drive on 10 December 2022
  5. Hi-- I just posted the photo key in the discussion topic for anyone to try the rally on another day (it was WET this morning in San Francisco!!!) [General discussion topic including route instructions and photo key]. Also, if anyone has photos from today (or relevant to NT49MD-22),please post at [Photos of NT49MD-22 in BayArea 02 image gallery]--THANKS!
  6. Not the 49-Mile Drive is TOMORROW! Please download the Driver's Protocol and Announcements, along with the route instructions and photos from the discussion topic on the BMW 2002 and others page [NT49MD-22 discussion page]. See you at Ocean Beach before 9:30 in the morning!
  7. Hi-- I would NOT use an oil pressure gauge registering less than 100PSI! On my late '73 I used a Stewart Warner HD electric pressure gauge for a while, with a max of 100PSI. It was common with a cold engine in Arizona to run up to the 100 PSI line. And the electric senders would need replacing after a year or two. I recommend a 150PSI gauge and if you do not like the 90-degree sweep of the VDO electric gauge, try the mechanical gauge (yes, I know they may drip a little but as soon as I get the backordered VDO vacuum gauge, I'll try a mechanical gauge again). Also note that some VDO sensors cost less if you purchase one for 1/8" pipe and use an adapter to screw into the oil pressure port.
  8. Hi Spyke-- I made a couple of crimps as you see in the top&bottom photos below. While obviously the terminal was too large for the wires, I think you can see the pattern. I do not recall ever having a problem with my crimps in the past, a key reason I'm careful about loaning it out. Let me know if you want to stop by for a look (PM might get a faster response). I'm near Heather Farms Park. Larry
  9. Hi Spyke-- I have a crimping tool, see photo. The tool says it's for 22-10 Gauge wires in 3 steps. I bought it about 40 years ago from Honeywell Computer surplus in Phoenix and at one time it was calibrated for their computer production line. When you start the crimp and the ratchet engages, you need to finish the crimp before it will release. I suppose it's borrowable but not for long. And Walnut Creek is a pretty long drive from the South Bay (maybe a day drive over Mt. Hamilton then North through Livermore and over Morgan Territory Rd. to Clayton, the scenic longer route?). If you're planning to drive NT49MD on 10 Dec. and have your wires ready I expect to be there (IF Covid-19 cooperates-- I'm planning to test negative tomorrow...). What do you think? Larry
  10. Hi-- I recommend Superior Upholstery on Erickson Rd. in Concord. But I suspect that's a lot farther than you want to drive. I found that Jose does good work at a reasonable cost.
  11. Hi Rakearch-- Besides the smaller tire diameter for 175/70-13 compared to the stock 165/80-13, the wider tire is apt to make your trunk floor panel fail to sit flush. As I recall when I used 185/70-13 tires, the trunk floor panel would raise about 1/2" above the panel over the gas tank if I needed the spare. That's a key reason I'm limiting my spare tire search to a 165 tire (and NOT the XAS tire mounted on a steel rim on my mezzanine that came from my late '73 when I bought it new...). Larry
  12. Hi Raj-- Welcome to FAQ's BayArea 02 Region! I can direct you to BayArea02.com for some possibilities. First look at our sponsors (click on the menu link), some of whom can help your project. Then, hover on the Tech Resources tab and click on the Service Providers drop-down link. I will warn you that some of these providers are just historic while most are certainly still active. But I also STRONGLY suggest learning Tom Jones' recommendations since he has dealt with and worked for many BMW service providers (and now he works on P-cars for a racing shop). Good luck and keep us posted on your adventure!
  13. My late grandfather, born on a dairy farm 100 miles East of St. Louis in 1901, earned his "certificate of automobile repair" when he was 12. He commented once to me in my youth that when he was young, automatic transmissions of the day provided no more gear clash than common manual transmissions (think Model-T).
  14. Hello Barbara-- I do not have first-hand experience with local machine shops (I would generally listen to people like Tom Jones and Sean Casey for good shops), but I recall one of our group recommended Terry Tinney a number of years back. Terry is in Livermore and his website is [TerryyTinney Performance Motors]. He may be closer to you than some shops. Good luck! Larry
  15. Hi Steve-- Your "new" driving lights look good and fit the provenance of your 1800! I encourage you to use a selective yellow tungsten-halogen lamp if available to help with light performance and electrical system durability. And be sure to use a small dab of silicone grease on the bulb contacts to allow that "disassembly is the reverse of assembly". Larry
  16. Hi Jen-- I'm sorry to hear about your car-- they become so personal. But I'm confident it can be properly repaired. I will note BayArea 02 has a number of sponsors you can see and click links to at [BayArea 02 sponsors]. Some do body work, like Restoshop (oops-- no logo!) and Auto Sports Exclusive in San Mateo. A while back I had good paint applied at a shop in Lafayette that now just does detailing. I also have confidence in Michael DuBois's body shop in Hollister, although their main work is accident repair. But when his shop repainted his Malaga tii, they did a fine job on "Bacchus". Larry
  17. Bob-- Thanks again for your help yesterday at S&S-22, including your excellent photos! Besides photos, your help transporting things, manning the raffle ticket sales table and both you and your wife helping keep the canopies on the ground during the 25-MPH afternoon "breeze" show how this event is successful primarily due to the volunteers who pitch in to make it happen. Your photos help capture both the ambiance of the event and also some of the delightful smaller features that make all of us keep enthused to do it again! Maybe some of your photos belong in the FAQ wheel gallery. Also, I created an image album where you and others can post more photos from S&S-22: [BayArea 02 galleries]. Use the BayArea 02 Swap & Show-2022 gallery. Using an album like this helps keep photos in an easy-to-find location without searching for different posts in various places. Larry

Cars and canopies at Swap&Show-22, 7 May 2022, Brisbane Marina
  19. Here is the late Curt Ingraham's spreadsheet showing tires that fit 2002's and discussions about how well. A few tires, like the OEM 165/80-13 XAS and the popular 185/70-13 CN36 are still available from specialty vendors (NOT old stock but special manufacturing runs apparently using old molds). This is a good time to choose tires you like instead of a size someone else adapted to a 2002. 2002 wheel-tire fit from Curt 080424.xls
  20. Are you interested in the East Bay? I had good luck with Superior Auto Upholstery, 1128 Erickson Rd, Concord, CA 94520 , (925) 689-9440. Jose completely reupholstered the seats in my wife's previous black 1984 528e and the results were wonderful-- looked good and were very comfortable; the seats were also mechanically repaired (used BMW cloth). Another well-regarded upholstery shop would not cut foam to fit (he wanted to rebuild the horsehair cushions that were just NLA) at a higher fee. Jose also rebuilt the Konig seat from my late 2002 and sewed nice gray seatcovers to compliment the black interior in my tii. Although I have not needed upholstery services in a decade or so, this the first place I would stop, parking perhaps among the Alfas and Porsches that also constitute Jose's clientele.
  21. When I verified Swap & Show-22 did not have a conflict with other events I was able to find them online with a bit of searching. I agree the calendar would be more comprehensive if organizers of events more than 100 miles away from me would add theirs. Looking back at my notes I see: MidAmerica 02Fest 28-30 April; Vintage in Asheville on 16 May; SoCal Vintage in November (first Saturday?)
