  1. The 4 speed on my 72 2002 is nearing the end of its life, I fear. The second gear syncro no longer exists, and the transmission whines like a truck transmission with straight cut gears (!) How much could I expect to pay for a good/rebuilt 4 speed unit? Would it be worth the time and money to upgrade to a 5 speed? Thanks for the input.
  2. There is a vacuum line that attaches to the fuel pump that maintains the pressure after the engine shuts off. This was disconnected on my car, so all the fuel would drain back to the tank overnight. It is a small connection on the bottom of the pump, easy to miss. For me, anyway.
  3. Excellent! I assumed there was some sort of external fastener. Thanks for the quick response, will get right on that.
  4. The mirror on my driver's door is now officially useless. It used to be that a big rig going by in the opposite direction would turn it in, but otherwise it would stay adjusted properly. Now any speed above 30 mph the mirror folds itself in. Is there a way to tighten up the adjustment on the mirror? I've never had the door apart, so I'm not exactly sure how it comes off either. Thanks in advance.
  5. I think the car is a 2000 sedan, or at least thats how it looks to me..

  7. It was a Turkis blue 73 Tii that was just around the block from my house. She was a good deal, but she was sick. I drove her around the block and it wasn't healthy. The 5 speed was something I missed from my current car.
  8. I have no clue how old the bearings are, I've had the car for a little over a month now. Will check the guibo, thanks for the input.
  9. So, I've started noticing a weird noise in the car. It happens when driving 40mph +, and its a deep, bass-y rumbling vibration. Its very audible, and you can feel it a bit in the seats. It happens no matter what gear the car is in, and pushing in the clutch yields no difference either. I'm thinking wheel bearing? There's also a clunking noise underneath when taking a tight right hander at speed. Are these anything serious? Thanks in advance!
  10. I drove from Rohnert Park to Concord and back today, from 1-4:30 I was on the road. The car did well, only getting a little warm when I was following too close. Once I got out of the vacuum left by the car in front and the radiator could get more air it was fine. Running at just a hair over the half way mark. I coped decidedly less well, with all windows open I still managed to drink 5 bottles of water, and the vinyl seats made my back into a giant sweat stain. Other than that it was great. I love driving this car.

  12. My 2002 has a weber 32/36 conversion, but the P/O put on the weber air cleaner and pitched the stock one. I'm looking for a stock air cleaner for the car that I can adapt to fit. I have the brackets, but I need the assembly and the intake hose. I am located in Concord, CA; but I don't mind paying for shipping.
  13. This place was an awesome place to shoot pictures, a friend of mine is a budding photographer and he agreed to shoot some digital.... film? The water and the lighting simply combine into beauty. 1972 2002 in agave. Not restored or in mint condition, just a nicely maintained survivor.
  14. My 1972 02. Agave green, fairly stock & original. Photo shoot @ emeryville pier, and plenty more where that came from! (nt)
  15. Apparently, as it turns out, its just a standard 02. Ah well, I couldn't care less!
  16. There's a place by me in Concord where I have bought it before. Ned's Auto Body Supply 1939 Market Street Concord, CA 94520
  17. Well, first off thanks for all the welcome and good advice! I'm not sure if the car is a real Ti or not, but I was told by the P/O that it was. Today I successfully repaired the odometer, and I ran a ground wire from the fuel gauge with no success. It jumps around a little less, but now when I turn on the key it rises from the bottom peg straight to empty, but when i measured the resistance @ the tank I got 35 ohms. I'm going to check over the grounds again. Any suggestions on a good mechanic in the East SF Bay Area? (Concord, Walnut Creek, etc.) EDIT: Should the contacts on the float on the sending unit be touching the thin wire? Mine aren't...
  18. I bought a 1972 Agave Ti about 3 weeks ago, and I think I am in love. I have wanted one of these cars for as long as I can remember, and it is just amazing! The woman who we bought it from had receipts for $5800 of work done @ Sacramento BMW when she bought the car in 2008. Everything from radiator, tie rods & idlers, brakes, shocks, heater blower, core, & valve, and a bunch of other miscellaneous things. The deciding factor to buy the car was the decent original paint, and the complete lack of rust on the car except on the front chin spoiler. But, as with any 30+ year old car, there are some small teething problems. My father and I both have extensive experience working on 1960's american cars, but this is our first foreign car! Since we've had it, I put on a new weber 32/36 to replace the worn out sieve of a weber that was on it before. I put on new plugs and wires as well. The vent located on the valve cover is not connected to anything and occasionally oils up the engine bay, any thoughts on routing a line somewhere? The exhaust broke off @ the muffler in a small fender bender, so I need a new curved piece. (if that makes sense) Like most 02's, my odometer is broken, which isn't a very big deal. But it comes into play later on. The fuel gauge was broken when I bought the car, and upon removing the sending unit the wire was broken! So after a quick soldering, the gauge works. Sort of. It proudly declared a full tank, which was correct after we re-installed the unit. The gauge inconsistent, however, in that while driving around it bounces from empty to full, and is just very erratic most of the time. However, 2 weeks later imagine my surprise when I ran out of gas! I had no idea how far I had driven due to the broken odometer, and the gauge had only moved down to 3/4 in between tweak out sessions. And to top it all off, when I tried to fill the car at the gas station I barely coasted into, I ended up with gas coming out of the filler neck boot, through the trunk drain holes, and right onto my shoes. I think this is also the reason the trunk reeks of gas all the time. On another note entirely, I fear the transmission may be ready to let go. When the clutch is let out in neutral @ idle, a whirring/whining noise starts. And when going through the gears there is a distinctive whine, almost like a truck transmission! And the second gear syncro seems weak, because any quick shift or downshift is punished with a dreadful grind. These problems have not dampened my spirit one bit, I just can't wait until I can keep driving my car! If anyone has any ideas on how to fix, or recommendations on where to buy the parts I would love to hear them!
  19. OK, So I have always wanted a 2002, and I think I'm ready. I'm not sure whether to sell my current car or if anyone wants to trade, so here goes. It's a 99 Trans Am WS6 Auto, w/ a stage 2 shift kit and a few other little things, 142K miles, just did Water pump@139, and oil just 100 mi ago. Good running daily driver, no mech problems. Rear bumper will need to be repainted, other than that it's fine. I'm just going to describe my Ideal car for you, but I know I won't find one exactly like it It's a roundie, standard (not tii) with a 5 speed conversion in Orange. Anybody with anything like this want to trade? Let me know!
