  2. It looks alot like a 242 4 speed that I have from a E12 520.
  3. beeuark !! why did you chose that box ? its the same box as in a XR4TI and is a true piece of sh*t ! you were a hair close to put a borg warner T5 man...that would be the ultimate trany. I am wondering if it fits on the bell housing of the T9 "hummer" type trany. this trany dates back from the early 60's and was a 4speed initialy, the 5th one was added later. you cant shift fast with this one like the original 02 box for sure. btw i have one in one of my shed... I agree that the Type 9 in stock form is not as nice to shift as the Getrag but the whole point of exercise was to change ratios. When I last priced a set of ratios for the type 9 , it was around NZ$2000 from the local quaffe agent. (they also turn up 2nd hand locally). I've never seen a close ratio getrag box for sale locally - although I was chatting to a fellow 2002 racer on the weekend who said he just saw a dogleg box go for 3500 Euro on German ebay. I've also looked at a mechanic mechanic close ratio box at current exchange rates it was NZ$5300 plus freight & taxes. So the type 9 was cheap to install, will be relatively cheap to modify, there are lots of ratio options and there are a lot of people locally who have worked on them. 4. Sierra (Ford type 9) with a Quaffe kit. I've got the box in - just need to sell my first born for the Quaffe kit
  5. Don't forget the brakes & good tyres. The picture below was taken on Saturday - We really struggled as the tyres were well past their use by date.
  6. I managed to do this to my Bilstein - mind you I had it coming
  7. every time I beep the horn the engine dies!. This caused the guy at the testing station & my wife much mirth. I think I know what the problem is - the horn & the ECU share an earth point which probably has some corrision on it, so it should be easy to fix. Still even I had to agree it was quite funny.
  8. Actally I only need the fitting at the speedometer end, I need to make up a custom cable to go from my Type 9 gearbox to the speedo. So if you have a damaged cable with a good end that would be perfect. Cheers Craig
  9. Try checking the engine ground. Put a volt meter between the block & and the battery negative. It should show 0V when cranking. I had a similar symptom, as I cranked the voltage rise on the block would change the temperature sensor output so the ECU thought the engine was really really hot so it would try and adjust the mixture & timing to suit. Edit Actually it could also be a faulty temperature sensor. You should be able to test it with an ohm meter, a thermometer and a kettle.
  10. Thanks for the heads up on the mount, won't changing the e30 head onto the 2002 block do bad things to my compression ratio?
  11. Yes, An e30 EFI manifold is a common way of putting fuel injection on a 2002. Mental note - need to remember to change the coolant outlet manifold as well - or the inlet manifold won't fit
  12. That's why I was planning to put the e30 cam into the 2002 head, so that I'd get the dizzy spinning the right way
  13. Hi, My sons e30 318 (Alice) has developed a terminal sounding rattle. (Not all that surprising given it's current engine was purchased just for it's inlet manifold and pushed into service when Alice's original engine was found to have a cracked block). I've just swapped out the motor in my 2002 rally car, the motor I've taken out is basically stock but a good runner and only done about 2000 km since having new rings, bearings & seals. The plan is to swap the following E30 parts on to the 2002 engine. Cam shaft Sump Oil Pump Flywheel Distributer Exhaust manifold Inlet manifold. Is there anything else I need to watch out for?
  14. Somewhere in between, firmer than a road car but doesn't loosen your fillings
  15. see also this thread http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,290352/ Scroll down to the bit on the rear subframe
  16. 2002 Rally Car - "Inky" 2002 Project - "Veronica" (both named for their colours) 318 E30 - "Alice" because it lives next door to the 2002's
  17. I'm using the reluctor to trigger the ECU and the rotor to distribute the spark. But I've welded up the the mechanical advance and will disconnect the vacuum advance (ECU handles all of that). I've also tweaked the relationship between the reluctor rotor and the rotor so that at full advance we don't "fall off" the edge of the rotor. The cam shaft has been replaced to change the distributor direction to be the same as an E30. If you want the direction of rotation to be the same as a 2002, you also need to change the E30 dizzy shaft to a 2002 shaft otherwise the spirals on the shaft tend to pump oil out of the engine instead of back in - ask me how I know. I acknowledge that this setup is not as good a crank angle sensor setup up but my ECU can't handle that sort of input.
  18. Does anyone know how much axial clearance a distributor should have?. Specifically a Bosch 0237002096 - an e30 one I'm adapting for use with my Link ECU. Last time I did this I based shimmed it up until it felt "right" I was hoping to apply a little more science this time. And yes I am aware of the change in rotation direction between 2002's & E30's
  19. A bit out in left field but, If you changed the 3D cone to a 2D cone such that it only adjusted mixture as it moved in and out. Then if you connected the cone to a solenoid that was driven by a pulse width modulation scheme. Then it may be possible to use a MS to control the mixture by varying the cone position. It's probably more of a research project than I'd like to tackle and you'd have to fit a map sensor, TPS, coolant sensor & rpm sensor but most of the changes wouldn't be that visible and maybe you could get it past tech inspection as still being "as fitted". "How hard can it be?" "What could possibly go wrong?"
  20. Pukekohe, New Zealand. At least I'm south of the Bombay hills, so I'm not an Aucklander! I'm always a day ahead of most the posters here - hence the user name.
  21. Thanks for that, as it happens I have a brother in law in Brisbane & my father in law is off to see him this weekend. He may well have a steering box in his luggage
