  1. what is the rating of the trailer? in case of a flat, a trailer with four wheels is always better than two. having said that, I am sure many have trailered light vehicles on a single axle trailer. Brakes on the trailer may be required in your state as well.

I have a 46 Willys jeep and I have tried numerous trailering options. Everything from a uhaul that would hold a big old caddy to a car dolly. I finally settled on a tandem axle trailer - life is good. It doesn't sway and tracks nicely behind my SUV.

  2. Does the center carrier bearing support the weight of the driveshaft? Mine was replaced apprx 3k miles ago and I noticed that the driveshaft rests on the lower side of center. While in this position, I am unable to get the proper alignment of the driveshaft. If I place a 3/8 piece of rubber fuel line under the bearing, everything is good.

    thanks for any advice

  3. Hi

I am looking for a transmission exhaust bracket that mounts on the rear of the tranny. In my case it would mount on a Getrag 240 - 5 speed but I think one from a 4 speed would work. I believe there are two pieces to the bracket plus the clamp. Any help would be appreciated

    thanks

  4. I restored a 46 Willys Jeep about ten years ago. Since then I have towed it with 4 wheels down via a tow bar, a tow dolly with the driveshaft disconnected and with 4 wheels up on a trailer. I am the happiest when all 4 wheels are off the ground. I would feel the same way about my 2002. When towing my jeep with a dolly, I had to maintain lower speeds than usual because it would wag - plus I would stop to check wheel bearings and to make sure the diff wasn't too hot.

Seems to me I have seen a picture here of an open U-Haul trailer with an 2002 stuffed in it - seems like a simple, reasonable solution.

good luck - some can hook on a rope and tow a car 100 miles without a problem. Others aren't so lucky.

  5. While I have not sorted out the exact number, it appears my driveshaft is approx. 3/8 of an inch too long. The diff is moved as far to the rear as it will go and the driveshaft knuckles downward at the center carrier bearing. I am unable to level it because of this. The condition existed before my ownership and does not create any unusual vibration but it appears to be hard on guibos. Is it possible to remove enough material off each end of the driveshaft to solve my dilemma?

    74tii - 5 speed

    thanks - Jeff

  6. I bought the car with it already installed. I just pulled it for a rebuild, I have no idea what it has on it for miles. If I recall, it has the same gear ratios as the 245, is shorter and a little lighter. My driveshaft was shortened to allow the fit but the rest seems to be stock. Some say it is a weaker transmission compared to the 245 - if you give it a good google or FAQ search you will turn up more info

Give Metric Mechanic a call and pick their brain, they should be able to help you out if you need more info beyond searches
