  1. I was fortunate that the larger tank matched the original space so well. However, I understand that on some years or models the tank cutout in the trunk floor may have to be enlarged or a mounting hole on the tank altered. Basically it is my understanding that one merely takes the year and type of ’02 (i.e. injected or not) and converts it to the same year and type of appropriate six cylinder model and installs that tank in your 2002.

Sounds like be either E9 coupe or E12 530i. The filler in the E3 would be wrong, too bad too 'cause they'd be the easiest to find, and probably least expensive.

  2. I gave up on the aggravation of rebuilding calipers decades ago, NAFTA helped make purchase of rebuilt calipers from Checker (in CO) or Kragens (in CA) cost-effective and entirely affordable. Hint: when you see rebuilts offered somewhere like on eBay, they are usually marked up 50-100% from the retail cost of the same from one of these type outlets.

    My '02 cents' worth

  3. Now I'm imagining an 02 with a street ported 20b in it.... damn that thing would move. Of course, for that sort of money I would rather have a heavily built turbo M10, but still, got to love the sound (and revs) of a rotary
Mike, a 20B isn't that 'spensive now is it?
  4. --shrug-- I don't know if you boys are thin-skinned, or full of misplaced bravado. Should I apologize because you (apparently) got pissed that I took the time to let you know what I saw ?

Let me rephrase: It was not my intention to offend by providing the inspection results, my "point" was to give the new owner (Andy?) the results of my going out there and looking the car over. My needs (for "eurotrashes" benefit) were shopping for a mule car for some suspension work and a donor for some parts for my new (to me) 71 touring, as well as an interior for my old '68 1600. I would have bought the car on the spot for the asking price if the trim bits (which I wanted for the touring) were still in near-new condition. They're not. The interior would be great and complete as is for my old friend the 1600, which presently is very old inside but has scheel seats which I would like to use in the touring. When I contacted the seller a couple of days later, he told me he'd just received the money in his account, and I congratulated him for the sale, knowing full well that he'd already been burned bad by the eBay seller and was taking a loss. Jim is a stand-up guy, and it is good to know that both he and (I trust) the new owner are happy with the transaction. I have bought cars sight-unseen before, and on reflection would have appreciated any eyewitness feedback before taking delivery. Obviously my error was in thinking another hobbiest would also appreciate such feedback, your reactions indicate I was clearly mistaken.

I feel the slam remark about Tii's was unnecessary, and low-class, but am sure "eurotrash" enjoyed having gotten the dig in. My 72 Tii was bought 15 years ago for 1100 dollars from the fellow who got it from Michel Potheau (RIP) one of the original founders of the BMW CCA. Being it is from back east it is very rusty, but it is a Tii and I hope to refinish it one day, it does not represent a higher station in life or anything, it is just an old car with "potential." The IMSA/RS car is also cool, and a restored vintage race car with some killer bits and (apparently) a checkered/disputed history. No matter, it is a plain old slide-throttle K-fisher-injected toy, a lot of fun, and likely has more potential as a vintage racer than I (or 99.9% of forum members) could ever fully utilize.

Trash, I think to first insult another list member by calling them a "kill-joy", and then slamming whatever ride they have is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. Generally I sincerely try to conduct myself in a better manner than that, I regret my report seemed to cause you gentle men such consternation that you felt it necessary to publicly chatter, after offering insults which were (truthfully) un-necessary. What you do with your cars is cool in your sight, and thats all that matters. But sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, your choice to show insult over a perceived wrong in the fashion you did (by trying to insult) was just plain sophomoric.

  5. I went and looked the car over Saturday, for my needs it would have been a parts car for 8-900 bucks tops, just talked to the seller today and he said he'd just gotten payment from (Andy?) a guy in Arkansas. The interior is redone and clean, dash cap is better-looking than I thought they would be but still a cap. Seats recovered and nice if you like the over-stuffed vinyl look with generic pleats. Undercarriage including suspension/brakes/etc appeared untouched by the previous seller. Its an automatic. Underhood AC stuff missing. All underhood smog bits except the charcoal can are missing. Much of the belt stainless was new but several pieces was damaged when the eBay seller installed it. Carpet is generic replacement. Lower trim between the wheelwells removed and putty is thick under the shiny new paint with cracking on both quarters in front of the rear wheelwells. As a 20-footer the sides appear ripply, there's not a lot of rust in the chassis, rear bumper's early US 1600 and nice, front needs rechrome. I am not surprised eurotrashes brother said "no power", out here the most recent seller had Bimmerhaus check the compression, 3 cylinders read 40

  6. I think a different way of re-phrasing your question is "was the 38cm wheel available for purchase when 02's were built." I do not know if one could have an 02 stateside built to order, but considering how the distribution network was then I think it was very uncommon (if even possible) to "order" one with any add-on stuff installed. This could be totally wrong, however.

Best way to find out if the 38cm wheel was available back then (I don't know why it wouldn't have been) would be for someone to pull out the old orange parts books and look it up... any orange parts book for coupes or 02's or even Bavarias c.1972-1976 will answer the [rephrased] question ... I would look it up for you but I sold off all my orange parts books years ago to "collectors" for stupid big money

  7. Please tell me that the original interior photo isn't for your Gruppe 2 race car.

Full, factory dash, door panels, a passenger seat(?), the list goes on and on, but the suspension and drivetrain is "anything goes"?

Well, different rules for different series I guess....................mac.

Mac, Gp.2 wasn't quite "anything goes"....but you're correct, that foto is a stock foto of an Alpina street 02, don't know the vintage though, 4-spoke wheels confuse me.

  8. CD iesel's posted graphic reminded me of something I'd forgotten for over 20 years, at least, I think that long (I don't remember.)

THAT....was an impression of sport steering wheels I got from the old orange parts books: that they could be had with the turn signal actuator mounted in the horn button surround (a la big Healeys) BUT ... I have never seen one, nor have I ever seen a solid spoke (no holes) Petri...has anyone??

  9. The part numbers you need are

    51 71 6 454 225

    51 71 6 454 226

    51 71 6 454 227 and

    51 71 6 454 228

I just happen to have gotten out my stash to put some on the touring, so I had the numbers handy.

Call your dealer, or one of the other suppliers already mentioned.

    Hope this helps

  10. Hey everyone, I'm planning on getting a Petri Sport Steering wheel for my ti and had some questions. I know the common sizes are 35cm and 40cm as shown on the parts catalogue, but what about the 38cm diameter ones that appear once and then... also the leather covered ones? Any info is much appreciated, also some pictures would be great. Cheers, Bruce

35cm, 38cm, and 40cm were available from the dealers. 38cm with leather covering was fitted to E9 CSL's most of the time...many coupe-istas claim that CSLs ONLY came with leather-covered 38's, and that only 38's were leather-covered, but I have a leather-covered 35 that is factory.

02's and E9 coupes use different hubs, which doesn't matter if you don't want a working horn, otherwise it does since the 02 wheel uses a spring-loaded button that rubs on the horn contact in the column, and the coupes have the contact ring in the wheel (with the spring-loaded contact button in the column.) It also matters if you want the turn signal lever to automatically return to off on a coupe, but you have an 02, right?

The hubs are nearly unobtainium, and the black plastic cover for the hub even more so, they were never sold separate from the wheel so spares are honestly rare.

I use the 35cm Petri's on one of my coupes and on my Tii and 1600. Some folks prefer the 38 or even the 40 on an 02 if you have +2 or +3 wide wheels and tires, but those bigger wheels do start to look...bigger.

38's and 35's are generally more expensive than 40's, in truth the 40's seem pretty uncommon. A concours-clean wheel can be over a grand, even more for a CSL wheel with the leather grips. If you are diligent, and lucky, you can find a good presentable wheel in the 400-600 dollar range.

Used to be able to snag them from international eBay sites, but with the declined dollar they are just as expensive now as from the usual North American sources (which usually never have them!)

    Hope this helps!

  11. I hope to become a more dilligent consumer ....

Go do it at another crowd's expense, masquing a thread and then bombing a non-BMW NA "dealer" (who DOES provide a service whether you think so or not) was, frankly, bullshit.

For a couple decades '02 people had a (deserved rep) for being tight, stupid, and offensive.

Many of us have made a lot of effort to dispell that image however, you sir, totally deserve it.
