engine and drivetrain Starter stuck ON!

Just finished putting our '74 back together after a crcked head, but now when I go to start the car, the starter motor wont stop turning over once I've tried to start the car.

i.e. Put key in the ignition, go to start car, starter motor turns over engine, turn key to off (remove keys!) and starter motor continues to turn over the engine until I disconnect the battery.

With that said, after I have disconnected the battery and reconnected, it won't continue to turn over.

I'm guessing a screwy relay/solenoid or something? Any ideas to save me time?

(This is all done with no sparkplugs in, so not expecting the car to actually start)

I had the same problem with my volvo and it turned out the casing on one wire going to the starter and one going to the ignition had cracked and they were touching, interfering with each other.

if the starter is an old unit, the bearing wears and the pinion gear gets stuck in the out position. hit it with a hammer to spring it back into the housing. Replacement of starter is recommended since a rebuild is necessary for fixing the worn bearing.
