engine and drivetrain Rebuilt Engine

Im looking at a 74 with a puff of smoke when I down shift and when accelerating between gears. Im pretty sure it just needs a valve job but am curious what i would be looking at for a rebuilt motor. Anybody know of any sites or shops in the West (preferably) who I could get this quoted from. I might rebuild the motor myself, but I am not sure if I have the time. Any help on this issue would be most appreciated.
