Replacing Brake Pads

B-Doon

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Sorry for the amateur question.....

When replacing the brake pads, they fit REALLY tight...the rotor spins, but it is definitely rubbing against the pads...it this normal? Do the pads just need to be broken in by driving for a while?

Any advice, thoughts, jokes, or criticisms of my lack of mechanical ability are welcome...

Thanks,

Brian

It's possible that prior to inserting the new pads you did not push the pistons back into their housing as far as you should have. No big deal, though. As soon as you go out to break-in the new pads all should be fine, as the system will adjust the pistons for you.

It is most definitely that the pistons in your calipers are not pushed back far enough. Try pushing them back in as far as possible, or it might be a sign to get your caipers rebuilt. Definitely worth it if you plan to keep the car. It is a breeze to put in new brake pad after having the calipers rebuilt.

It is normal for the pads to rub on the rotor. In motion there is no brake pressure so it is not a problem.

The pads should be broken in. Go to an empty road and do several hard stops in rapid sucession from 50 MPH or so. This will bring the temp of the pad surface up and will boil off excess bonding agents. Then drive for a while without using the brakes on the freeway or something to cool them down.

I first owned a 2002 in 1975.
