i hear a low whirring growl in the transmission until i engage the clutch. this car is new to me. it has been sitting 4 years. my mechanic got it up and running. wondering if it is going to need a transmission or if this is normal operation.

thank you,

baron

It seems that I have had that noise in all my 02's (10) to a different degree. One had a lot of play on the input shaft, and made the most noise. The others were probably low, old oil or had oil that was too thinl. I had red line mulitgrade on one and had to switch to regular tranny oil to reduce the noise. It almost eliminated it but the shifting is not as smooth now.

When your foot is on the clutch, you can get noise from a bad pilot bearing or the thrust (takeoff) bearing. Especially if the car has sat for a while, like yours has.

Both need the tranny out to replace. Pilot bearing is about $5, thrust about $100.

Change the oil too as it can't hurt.
