Wrong Motor Mount?

Recently experienced what seems to be the shifter linkage hitting the Guibo when in 4th gear. I have the 5 speed conversion. I suspect a motor mount might be going bad but am not sure. When I did some inspecting tonight, I found the drivers side mount looked very much like the passenger side mount. Is this normal? There is nothing that looks out of place but the mount looks different than the ones sold online and even the ones in the book. Any thoughts?

Without pictures or a more detailed description it is hard to respond to your post. There is a round a and rectangular style left side motor mount available for 02's but neither of these resemble the passenger right side mount.

Your mounts may be soft, broken or maybe even the wrong style and this might account for your issues. But so might transmission misalignment, a bad transmission support mount, or just as likely a loose of worn set of mounts that retain the transmission shifter assembly. The archives have much information on this subject.

You found the mounts that are on the car?

Determining the condition of the mounts is pretty obvious. First, do they look solid? Is the rubber soft or hard? Bloated? Gooey?

Second, take a piece of wood or some tool for leverage and tug stretch or compress the amount to determine if it is still intact and cushioning/ cradling the engine. If its broken or very soft you will notice extreme movement.

Third, watch the movement with engine running. Goose throttle and observe mounts.

If you have a tough time following this, find an uninstalled mount and observe it in your hands and this should answer your remaining questions.

Thanks for the info. I will try and post pictures tomorrow. I will look at the mount for the shifter too. Not something I thought of.

On another note, I attempted to look up this topic in the archives as I know there should be plenty there. I found very little. Any tips?

I've also had problems with my guibo hitting my shifter rod, with a stock 4-speed and perfectly fine engine mounts, tranny mount, and shifter mounts!

I got no idea why, but I just took a grinder to my shifter rod and took a big chunk out of it and forgot it. Still no idea why, but it doesn't hit anymore.

i'm drunk and i approve this message.

I neglected the fact that you were pursuing an issue with a 5-speed conversion. Depending upon which "version" was employed in yours, there can be a host of annoying issues. But some of them are universal to all drivelines, e.g., transmission shifter mounts and engine mounts.

Some of the sellers of conversions, (Dave Varco, 02 Haus, Metric Mechanic, Ireland Engineering, etc.) have no doubt dealt with issues similar to yours as well as a number of independent folk here. If worse comes to worse, you could try contacting some of the vendors mentioned and I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have a trouble shooting guide. In the meantime, here are some of the posts I was able to locate off the top of my head. This is by no means an exhaustive search, but maybe it will be helpful.

For a starter (or shifter), take a look at these two threads and in particular, CD's diagrams: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,269595/highlight,shifter+bushing+mike/

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,283247/highlight,motor+mount+shift/

Now as far as engine mounts, try this for a start:

http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=ST12&mospid=47140&btnr=11_2414&hg=11&fg=10

With respect to the 5-speed, try this for a start:

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,284919/highlight,5speed+alignment/

and some of the pics may be helpful from this thread:
