Let me ask you a question. How can the same engine with a solex carburetor also run with a Weber carburetor or Fuel injection. There is obviously more than one piston style, carb style and yes ignition delivery system out there. Changes were more than likely due to stricter emissions standards. These changes may have also precipitated other changes like different final drive ratios.

Before the advent of distributors, many cars, e.g., the Model T, had three engine controls: ignition/magneto on-off switch; throttle setting AND ignition spark advance. Settings were always in the ballpark and rarely the same between the same cars. So yes there was a mechanical or manual retard.

Now as far as retard mechanic, I believe it more correct to refer to one as a special person with a hammer. And, if he's by the seashore, maybe he carries a can of seafoam as a solvent for the engines filled with seashells.
