carb problems :(

today i couldn't start my car. it's been a pain to start from cold for a few days now, but i couldn't get it anywhere.

looked down the carb and saw big pools of fuel in the venturis. the fuel was spilling into there without touching the throttle.

after pinching the fuel line and turning it over until it was dry enough i got it to fire up.

drove the car to the shop and took the top off of the carb to find one of the floats (driver's side- primary? i forget) broken off.

had a spare lying around so i popped it in.

is this a pretty common thing to happen?

Were they brass floats? Ive heard of the brass floats wearing out after years of use. Thats why they make them with plastic now.

basically it just broke off where it was welded.

I've had the brass float of a Weber 32/36 split in half on a '74 2002 I had some years ago. It's mentioned in Pat Braden's Weber book that they do on occasion split and also not to resolder the old one, but to replace it with a new one.
