Car running like hell

Especially before the motor is up to totally full running temp, the idle is extremely rough, and any time I get on the gas it stumbles and lets out a muffled backfire, sometimes it seems to "backfire" out of the carb too perhaps??? Plugs are new, as are the cap and rotor (no points.) I'm running a 38/38 with probably 30k miles on it, I only use premium gas. My inclination is to pull the carb apart and give it a thorough cleaning. Any other recommendations?

I had that once when my points collapsed. Running Pertronix or other EI. I'd suspect that first.

IGNITION the "brain of the motor" but usually if its bad warming up the motor will make no diff.
