The whole procedure is in the Haynes manual, along with a picture.

You have to put it in a hot pot of water with a thermometer, a ruler in the top, and measure how much it opens when it reaches ~80C. Should be 8 to 9 mm.

More detailed explanation in manual.

hi

i haven't a book as yet as still waiting fir it though the post. could you send me that picture will be most grateful

PS: i have just done the test using 2 Bowls of water 1 x hot water 1 x cold water , when i put the thermostat from cold to very hot at 80c it opens very well and lets water though it. put back in cold water and the valve then shuts letting no water though it. is this a good thermostat .

yup - you gatta a good one there -

look closely at the thermostat and tell us the number cast,

or stamped on it - that tells you the temp rating -

find a thermometer to measure how hot your hot water really is.

On the cast is stamped 75c i haven't got a thermometer to measure how hot your hot water is at.

I Just boiled the kettle to it stopped then put the thermostat in the bowl of hot water and the valve opened

maybe i will just buy a new thermostat at 71c will this be better or i wonder if i have a bad rad cap?

what was your original problem ?

running too hot?

Too cold ?

got good heat/defrost ?

Ireland ? boggs, rain, no sun - and if your running too hot,

have you checked ignition timing, with a timing light, got good distributor advance ?

history/condition of the radiator?

"......./"............. of the water pump ?

maybe you really need a 80*c north countries thermostat which is what the 'parts catalog' is callinf for for yer mild climate ?
