For all of you without a BMW Owners Manual, BMW Repair Manual, and new to the 'old' car hobby, here is the present BMW Requirements and Specifications for Manual Transmission (1600 - 2002 model).

From the 'BMW OPERATING FLUIDS' - SERVICE ENGINEERING APRIL 2006, Group 23 Manual Transmission:

" ALL REPUTABLE BRAND MINERAL-BASED TRANSMISSION OILS

OF VISCOSITY CLASS SAE 80 ACCORDING TO SPECIFICATIONS

MIL-L-2105 OR API GL-4 "

I found GL4 hard to find. Most of it is GL5 which has too much sulphur for our brass syncros. NAPA sells a GL4 oil in a gal jug that is pretty cheap. That's what I have been using.
