Description:

This is my 1968 BMW 2002 that has been heavily modified and restored. I never ended up driving it on track, just ripping it up highway 9, and to various 02 and vintage car meets.

 

Car was in Washington before I purchased it and I had it trucked down to the Bay Area and registered in CA. (Some of you might remember that entire saga).

 

Not selling bc I want to :( My Finacee's Subaru caught on fire and her insurance won't pay it out. So giving up the project dream car for an automatic family transporter. Such is life.


Back to the 02. After some research, I found out that the car was originally an automatic and I was able to confirm that it was one of the first automatic 2002 sold in the US at Maximilian Edwin Hoffman's NYC dealership in 1968. I have the original color code too if someone was inclined to repaint it to its original form. (Paint job was on the list of to-dos) 
 

Clean CA title in hand and reg paid through 2025
38k miles on race-prepped 2-liter engine with dual 45DCOE Weber carburetors (confirmed that are original Webers from Italy manufactured in the 60s)
m10 motor has 12:1 compression
Stahl headers and Schrick cam
JE pistons
Oil cooler, Aeroquip fuel lines with regulator
MSD 6AL ignition with rev limiter (7400 rpm)
Accusump with manual valve in cockpit
Quaife LSD 3.64:1 ratio
Performance suspension with Bilstein front strut inserts and rear shocks, a strut tower brace and larger sway bars Later model short neck rear suspension
5-speed BMW transmission and hydraulic clutch
Has rebuilt the brake calipers - 320 larger diameter rear brakes
5-series front 4 piston calipers with vented rotors
Toyo Proxes R888s (could be replaced)
Differential bearings and seals are fresh
Original BMW Turbo Radiator and Fuel tank
New electric fan
The body has all steel tulip flares and a Zender fiberglass air dam
4-lug ATS wheels from Germany are super rare
ASC aftermarket power-sliding sunroof was fitted many years ago and works well
The battery and electric fuel pump are mounted in the rust-free trunk
Carpets have been removed but have proper door panels, and weathertech floor mats
Rare Scheel-mann adjustable seats have 5-point harnesses and a bolt-in roll bar
All lights, turn signals, and gauges are functional
Luisi steering wheel
Original 1968 dashboard is in great condition with an auxiliary gauge panel housing oil pressure, oil temp, battery voltage, and 4 channel EGT gauges - all working
Kooglewerks deadpedal and leather handbrake boot

The radiotor and the fuel tank are both out of a BMW 2002 Turbo

Runs on 91 with no issues.

FYI - the first US 2002 auto (2530001), supplied via Hoffman, was built May 1969. The first Euro LHD & RHD autos were built Jan 1969.

 

How did yours become a 1968?

2002 USA MANUAL gearbox (pre 71)

VIN range 1660001 - 1680000

manuf dates 2/1968 - 1/1971

 

Auto gearboxes in '02s started January 1969 in Europe with VIN 2500001 and May 1969 for USA models starting with VIN 2530001.

 

Even Julia can have a bad day.
