Re-Key Ignition tumbler?

Neildo11

Recommended Posts

Well I took the ignition cylinder to my local locksmith who has very good reviews, according to him the ignition cannot be rekeyed... I didn't want to fight him on it or tell him how to do his job so i'm on the hunt for another locksmith, if anyone knows of someone in the South Bay (San Jose, ca) area that can do this for me i'd really appreciate it... I found a thread that Long's locksmith in Berkeley is great but I'm hoping to find someome closer.

On a side note, I was under the impression the trunk lock could be rekeyed to match aswell but isn't it a single sided key? Not double sided like the ignition/doors? Maybe I misunderstood in my research... thanks in advance for the help!

I have door tumblers and ignition tumblers keyed to match all the time.  But I usually take the door handles to the locksmith along with the ignition tumbler to have them rekeyed.  So I guess I can't say that he rekeyed the ignition tumbler or the door tumblers to accomplish this.  I will ask him.

It is a single sided key but I would love to know if this is doable.  I will check with my local locksmith who knows these cars very well to see what he thinks.

This is the place all the other regional locksmiths recommend for vintage key making/locksmithing:  https://brandtlocksmiths.com/

Not only is the owner encyclopedic in his knowledge, he also has most of the parts on hand.  I've had dozens of '02 tumblers/keys done by them and they have never been stumped by an ancient lock.

But, bring only cash as they don't accept checks or credit cards.
