Cam for 1600ti

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am the lucky owner of a 1600GT. It is a low mileage original matching number car. I want to retain originality and at the same time upgrade driveability and performance. I have decided to swap to a 245/5 OD Getrag for highway enjoyment. The car has only 35k Kim's and has twin DCOE's and I'm looking to also improve performance. The engine has 9.5:1 compression pistons but a stock 264 cam. My question: would replacing with a Schrick 292 provide a noticeable performance improvement?

Pictures, pictures! We need more pictures!

To answer your question, in short, yes. But there are some things to consider.

The 1600 likes to rev but sacrifices a lot of bottom end power compared to the 2002, the same thing happens with more aggressive cams, so you might lose some low end torque, but will definitely gain power in the mid and high range.

Personally, with the higher compression and the rev-happy nature of the 1600, I think a cam would work well.

The key with all DCOE engines is to get it tuned properly.

+1 with those comments.

My '71, '02 with dual Solex DDHs ,292 cam, and flat top pistons ran okayyyyyy, until I got it properly tuned (biggest improvement came after advancing the timing)  I eventually installed a 123Ignition distributor and built my own advance curves, but timing to the max allowed in the Haynes manual really made a difference.

Get those DCOEs nicely sync'd (rebuild them if you think they are leaky at all) and advance the timing a few degrees.  Your high compression pistons won't allow as much as I run, but the improvement should be immediate.
