The first item (coil) is an early model MSD tach adapter.

and the second picture looks like the wiring for said MSD.

 

follow the gray (and the rest of the wires) to see where they go under the dash and in the engine compt....

It looks like an antique. Would you guys recommend replacing it with a newer one; or if it ain't broke...

I have the same unit on the Orange car. Look in the upper left corner of this picture. Of all the electrical issues I've had with MSD, Pertronix and wiring this unit hasn't really given any trouble. Just make sure your connections are tight or you will suddenly lose your signal. It's always entertaining when someone looks under the hood of one of our old crocks and can't figure out the "Doorbell Thingy".
