Metal Box Flares on a 02

Has any one seen metal flares before?

I have broke out the Magnet and it stuck.

The front lip was bent out due to tire rubbing and I had to bend it back. so I know it is metal.

I've seen the quasi-turbo flares in metal from Tabco a while ago, never seen box or Zender style flares in metal.

After spending the weekend rebuilding brake calipers and wire wheeling the inside of the wheel wells and painting. I found out more about these flares.

They are not bolt on.. It appears the original fenders that were cut and pushed out. Then metal was welded in the top, but I dont see any weld marks in front or behind the wheel indicating they were panels added to the side. But one would think that the metal couldnt stretch that far without some sort of spacers.

When I get ready to paint it in about a year, I guess I will learn more. Now I am just going to drive it and enjoy. I have my Bavaria back from the paint shop that needs to be reassembled before I start body work on an other car.
