Body work question. sill replacement

EXPAT

Recommended Posts

hello all, so I have slowly been working on my '70 02 and I have a bit of a rusted out body panel and as I went to remove it its much deeper than I thought at first... my drivers side sill which runs along the bottom from wheel to wheel is badly rusted so that the jacking point is broken off...

I have a new sill but it looks very daunting to replace,,, anyone have any experience with this replacement and can give me any insight or wisdom?[/img]

You photo isn't particularly clear, but it appears as if you need to remove ALL the rust and post some better pictures.

Are those Turbo flares?

Here's 1972 2002tii (VIN 2762084) and it took some very deep digging and extensive panel replacement to remove what initially appeared to be only minor rust.

I'm not suggesting you go to these lengths. On your car, merely cut the panels back to solid metal and replace what's necessary.

Be absolutely certain your car is structurally sound -- particularly the front rear subframe mounts and inner wheel house shock towers.

Thanks for the feed back, I bought the car last year it had flares on it yes... not really suited to the year I guess... but it adds a level of punk rock to the look. I havent decided what I will do with them. I like the look and at the same time I like the look without...

in the photo the sill or rocker panel ? is rusted through and there is not much left... I guess thats why the car was so cheap...

I have to remove the sill and see how it looks.

I found this link so far seems to be good to see what I am in for:

That site belongs to Martin who began work on his original Inka tii nearly a decade ago. It was far more rusty than he expected. (Aren't they all?) He absolutely is doing it right despite the seeming slow progress. It would be great to see it completed -- but sometimes life gets in the way.

For what it's worth, the picture I posted earlier in this thread of '72 Polaris tii VIN 2762084 was taken about one year ago.
