2002Cool2- 1970 BMW 2002 Project

Recommended Posts

Just got this from my buddy two months ago and started tinkering with car. He added a 320i head onto the standard 2002 block. Am just becoming familiar with the car. It drives and has a good kick to it but tends to pull due to the bent subframe. Found several kinks..battery have low cold crank amp and will not start when the weather is cold, sub frame is damaged and front fender appeared to have been bent inwards. He had someone started working on the body and left the car unfinish with some bondo.

Just posted the first picture (see previous thread). Been trying to compress the pictures to attain a smaller file size. As you can see some work had already started with patchy bondo and primer. Lots of more work to be done.

The car had an alignment problem from the start...pulling to the right. Tried re-aligning the wheels, but no success. Then I checked under the engine suspension and noticed the sub frame was damaged on the rigth side, below the engine support bracket. This sort of make sense as to why the car wanted to the pull to the right. It appeared to have ran over something...like a large rock or the curb. So..went to the yard and got me a replacement sub frame.

After back seats were in, it was time to tackle the front seats. I used the original 2002 seat rails and was able to fit onto the new seats. However, the new seat happens to taper from back to front so the front mounting holes were out of alignment. I had to drill new holes at the front end to account for the taper front side of the seat. It took several laboring attempts to install the lock washers and nuts for the bolts from underneath the frame. At the end, I couldn't be more happier with the result...clean new (used) seats.

Subframe Project...continued. Started cleaning up the subframe. It was a PIA of getting all the years of dirts and grime off the frames. Took several soak of "green" degreaser to get them off. Next is to prep with rustoleum rust coating and primed for paint touch up.

Was able to spend a couple of hours preping with rustoleum, sanding the rust and paint imperfection spots, plus the residual grimes in crevices. Did not sand the entire frame due to time and the fact that it will be under the car and getting dirt on it anyway. So there was no concern with making it look all nice and spiffy. It will soon be a daily driver. My concern was to get a clean surface to allow paint to adhere without peeling. I also did sand down the sway bar. Both got primed this evening....check it out!

Subframe completed, but not installed. Restoration included new and reconditioned- new innder and outer bushings, new idler arm bushings and re-conditioned stablizer bar bushings. Extraction and installation of the idler arms and subframe bushings took great amount of effort, but was successful. Several posted methods referenced within the forum search were used for the extraction process.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
