When drilling to reduce the shock length, are there any pointers? Wear goggles, special tools, close your mouth.... anything?

Use a new bit, the shocks were pretty tough. 

Use a punch to dimple the surface so the bit doesn't walk around. I used a sandwich meat container as a "shield" and drilled through it and into the shock.

Wear eye protection and just be careful.
