Hi Al,

I have learned a few things after having bought a similar alternator from you. You are right, you'll have to either a) fab a new upper bracket, B) obtain an upper bracket from an E30 318i [12311284306, $125 at BavAuto or at a reasonable price from your local junk yard] or c) some surgery on the mounting to get it to fit in the stock 02 mounting bracket.

Fortunately I have access to b without having to buy new, so that is the route I will be taking. Once I get some shop space or it stops raining.

Edit, you will also want 12311312137 the lower ratcheting bracket and the matching idler 12317677914, both available new from BMW. These two parts will add another $30-35 to the bill, unless sourced while obtaining the upper bracket at your local junk yard.

didn't i send you the upper bracket with the alt, I think it was from a 84 318i? Or it may need trimming, I wouldn't pay $125 just for the bracket. Anyways, I tried to put this in my tii, but needs a different lower bracket, I think. The tii upper bracket fits fine with a spacer. But, I know this conversion was successfully done by many FAQ fellows before me and it is a nice upgrade, way more amps than 320 alt. conversions.

Haha! Who's looking smart now?! You did send that upper bracket. I was so excited about the alternator I totally forgot you had sent that. And the part number does match the E30 318i.

Glad I chose to say something here; who knows when I'd have gotten back into that box. Glad I didn't toss it!

Now, you have no excuses to put that alternator in the car and provide detailed pictures to FAQ so next fellow will have a lesser pain, especially about how to mount the lower part, I am also curious. Most fellows ask questions and get good answers here but never follow up or provide pictures.

I will do that. I did order the lower ratcheting-type bracket. For the price they're charging, they should throw that special nut for free. That's the combination that my mechanic is running, but he is using the E30 318i alternator and not the 325i/M3 alternator.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
