There was some rust I knew about before purchasing the car, driver floor and a little around the shock towers. I discovered more than expected during the disassembly. Had I known what I was getting myself in to, I think I would have just driven the car this summer and put it for sale. Unfortunately now that I'm in to it, I'm in for the long haul.

Here are photos of the worst parts which require welding.

I hope they make you feel better about your 2002, because i feel pretty shitty.

Driver floor pan, the pedal knobs were holding on by a thread.

Passenger floor pan, there was a giant (unpainted) metal patch screwed and glued in

Yikes, never a nice surprise.

Check the front sub frame right by the firewall. They tend to rust a bit there.

Is it a sunroof car? I don't understand how you have rust along the roof trough. You could be rusty in the roof but that only makes sense if you have a sunroof car. If you do, you will likely need to do a new roof.

All this stuff ads up. Before you get too far, know what you are up against. You can find another body that maybe needs your motor and other mechanical parts.... it could be a better path to spending less.

thanks for comment.

No sunroof on this one, only the passenger gutter rail seems bad. any ideas how a novice can fix this?

Rust on the actual front sub frame? I didn't see any.

If your car was the Malaga color you would have my car exactly - right to the rusted frame rail, shock towers, etc. Good luck! As i'm in the process of stripping my 72 02' to the bare metal and setting forward to replace a lot of body. *YIKES!*

With that rust in the trough, you probably go water in your roof somehow. Have you taken the headliner out?

yes, headliner is out. things look 'ok' on the inside of the roof.
