  7. Since I am getting brave on the exterior I decided to open up the next can of worms. The quarter-panel. Besides W&N is having a sale! This was my first quarter on this car and I had no idea what I was getting into - could not really tell from inside what was behind it - and the manual was vague to me too- just some vague ideas from a guy named Barney and his Ceylon in the FAQ. Thanks Barney!!! 🙂 So I went for it. What you see here is me cutting open the rusty panel and finding another slightly rusty panel behind it - turns out it is spot welded to the outer rusty panel -
  8. Here is what was to me my first exterior panel work. It was fun and easier than I thought. I am done with it and will let the painter finish up the detail. No more rust. A member Coloincaalpine donated the sheetmetal from a donor car. Here is the donor panel... I lined up the two factory holes with my rear panel factory holes and did some eyeballing of the lines for what seemed like hours. Then I cut out the rust and clamped the panel behind scribed it, cut the shape I needed out the donor so it fit exactly the hole I cut in the rear panel, and inserted in the hole and used some ma
  9. Tackling the bottom of the spare tire well. Several spots of rust... Circled with a marker. So... had to fabricate sheetmetal with a groove pressed in for rigidity. I've got a lot to go in terms of shaping and cutting to size but wanted to post the first day of effort here. Had a blast dreaming this process up. I used my arbor press, routered out piece of plywood and a piece of hardwood as the press. Came out pretty well.
  10. This weekend I tackled what no sane person would ever do. I removed the tar undercoat by the previous owner (the carpet in the cover shot is long gone) from the inside of my trunk! Used Lacquer Thinner and Adhesive Remover and a plastic putty knife with much luck. VERY pleased to report very little body work underneath. Good news for when we strip the car - now I can have the trunk shot too. When I get more braver I will tackle the rust on the fenders - not much but a few spots need to be filled with metal.

    The Shell...

    Now that the dolly is on I am stripping the car down to the shell to ready for paint. Most everything is off the car now. Struggled more than I would like to get that chrome off the doors by the glass. Some minor (I hope) rust spots and then to the paint shop for some 2 stage (?) Agave! This car was sprayed once with Agave darkened a bit. I will bring to original Agave. Have not found any bondo but I know there is some here and there. A tricky rust spot under the left rear license plate light. Gonna ponder this one for a bit before I start on this cavity. anyone have a
  12. Moving on to the other few spots of rust on the car - this one was under the heater box. Was a fun project - took about 3 hours. Notice the rust gets worse as you go from left to right - I replaced the entire section to remove all the rust. Those two cut holes are from air conditioning I removed. Yes it is time for a new fuel line and vent line. Here is the piece of metal I fabricated and welded in. The butt welds are by far the hardest. The Rosettes are easy. If you found some rust on the body of your car, and want to both make your car look fabulous again AND prevent the rust from spreading like the cancer it is....Here ya go Step 0: First, you gotta clean the car. Good ol'fashioned car wash. Make sure it is dry afterward. STEP 1 - GETTING RID OF THE RUST Depending on the depth of your rust, you may be able to start with hand-sanding, or you may have to use a dremel. 1.   14. While we have driven my 73 tii a bit this summer with the revised the ride-height, suspension and wheels tires; the motor was not quite right. Performance was down and Jacob Marley was rattling the timing chains. In late September, my chief mechanic and brother Chris decided for various reasons to pull the motor, drop the sub-frame and transmission.   16. So this started as a California Car.....then I moved to Michigan. That sweet California patina turned into some good 'ole fashioned Michigan Rust. I wasn't planning to do any bodywork yet - but I already had the interior out (see other post), so I figured I'd nip it in the but while it was easily accessed. The rust isn't too bad - no holes, and it's upper body rust (Cali style) instead of ground- up. The rust is along the rear driver's side window.   18. ...So the glow of being a new 02 owner came off almost immediately... The good It was complete (mostly, and it wasn't original and that was okay, I was never hoping for the lawn at Pebble, but i was hoping for the dirt at Laguna...) It ran (mostly) It had a new windshield It had the short diff and a new subframe It had a 2002 engine from a 75 (again, complete, minus he smog gear) It had been painted in the last 5 years and i couldn't see any rust, maybe it was rust free?!?!   19. So the rebuild has officially started. I've taken enough apart to feel comfortable saying that the project moves forward and the shell is not being sold/scrapped. I got the car out of storage in November and trailered it to VA with a Uhaul. She went into the garage and the tear down began. The idea was to pull the engine are rebuild it, shove it back in and drive her around. While putting the car down on jack stands I heard a few crunches and crackles synonymous with frame rail disintegration.   20. So Tesoro is back from being blasted and there were LOTS of surprises!! (Did I mention I HATE surprises?!) Overall, the areas of the blasting that we did on the car looks solid, sturdy, and pretty clean inside the engine bay. I actually love how clean everything looks from the layers of paint removed from the different areas on the car. Nothing like the look and feel of blasted sheet metal to bring goosebumps to yourself! So that's the good news..... The bad news is that there are holes from rust. "Not that bad, I've seen worse! WAAAAY WORSE" says my mechanic. We've got holes by the pedal

  22. Last week I was back in Virginia to do more welding on the car.With my floor pans being mostly fixed, the next BIG issue were my rockers. The drivers side rockers were by far the worst, so I decided to start with them. Since I had bought the full rocker replacement panel from Restoration Design (who is the NA reseller for the W&N panels), I decided to replace the entire rocker.   23. Ive been tardy and let two work weekends pass without a blog update. So, first, a new pass side floor. trimming down the panel, and starting fitment and finding out where to cut. Yup... That is a big gaping hole in the floor. Get all the edges clean and ready to be welded in. Both for the panel to be welded in and the floor that needs the patch. Finally ready to begin the fun part.   24. Last time I was out to work on my car, I brought a piece of the rear seat bulkhead to repair. As you can see, the bottom edge was totally rotten. YUCK! While most of the bottom inch is going to get cut off, there is a few inches of solid metal I wanted to preserve. On the pic below, you can see the top right. I need to remove the old floor metal that has been spot welded on to the flange. In the next pic you can see where I have wire wheeled the flange and found the spot welds. I've also ground down the metal around the spot welds for easy removal. N
  25. From October to the end of December nothing got done on the car. Well, that's not really true. I got a ton of small parts back from the cad platers, and they look good. But for the most part, until this past week all my time for the past two months has been hunting, making stuff for Christmas in my shop, some crunch time at work, and then the actual holidays.
