  1. I'm new to carbs, but it looks like the kind of horns that bolt on to the flange are the only kind mine will take. Those being more expensive by far it turns out. I've heard that short horns are better for HP while long ones will improve low rpm grunt. My car will mostly do street duty -- I think I will enjoy the extra power down low, which is why I was looking for some around 70mm. Am I right in assuming that will necessitate me swapping to the tii brake booster? I have an itg air filter which needs that anyway.
  2. Nah, guess I'll just anty for the real deal if that really is the going price. Pretty much everything else on the engine is top notch. May as well not stop now. Still, if anyone has some high quality used ones around . . . Thanks for the advice, mates!
  3. Hey guys, Has anyone around here bought air horns recently? The only ones I can find that have the proper screw on attachment are at Pierce Manifolds but they are price at about $75 each. Is that the going rate for these things? Link: http://www.piercemanifolds.com/carbdetails/html/45_dcoe_152_filters.htm Do I need to spend somewhere in the vicinity of $300 for new airhorns? Anyone have any used ones for sale? I have 45 DCOE Webers.
  4. Thanks for the linkage info. I'll keep that in mind. I'm holding off a bit before I buy a linkage because I don't really know what I have yet. I got my carbs from Sean Casey in CA of 2002 Turbo fame. He just sent up boxes of stuff that go with them, so I don't really know what I have to buy yet. One thing, I've heard you can purchase a special anti-vibration nut to attatch the carbs to the manifold with. Don't know if I'm describing that right, but is this a common part. Where do I buy these if so? Thanks!
  5. Awesome. Thanks for all the great replies. I was at your site just yesterday Steve and I routed you for all your worth, but I really appreciate the larger size on this picture. (I also spent some time checking your videos. Nice sound) Thanks Tjones. Oddly, I already had quite a few of those pictures myself. But do you have any more of the guy with the ITG filter? I would love to see some more of how that's setup. Visionaut, nice to have you back. I've been on and off this board since 2002 myself. I'm especially interested in your setup because your the only person I've found thus far that's using the same manifold. I could really use some good pictures of your linkage if you have some handy. Are you running the BMW linkage or something else? Also it sounds like your carbs are set up for more daily street use, which is what I'm going for. Any information on how you did that is highly appreciated! Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your help, gents! Cheers!
  6. Hey guys, I'm knee deep in carbs 101 here. Can anyone looking for good karma post pictures of their carb setup? Internet links are appreciated as well. I have a set of 45 DCOE carbs with a Warneford manifold and ITG filter. There's a guy here named Visionaut that has a similar setup but I can't get ahold of him. I just need pictures that show me where all the various wires go, etc. Due a change in plans and budget I'm now setting this car for a more streetable approach. So any advice on that front would be great too. Thanks!
  7. I prefer to give my business to guys like Brian, but he's pretty far out (North Bend). Autosport down by Denny is a great classics shop that knows the 2002 intimately. They're also great guys willing to talk with you for hours about your questions. On the other hand, you have to pay top dollar for their expertise.
  8. Thanks for the tips about installing the carbs later. I have the Haynes manual (I wish there was a Bentley, as I really prefer their stuff) and it mostly talks about rebuilding and tuning. All of which is fine, but I was looking for some internet write-ups people might have done that are specific to this car. Anyway, thanks for the advice!
  9. hey all, I'm new to carbs and I'm installing my 45's on my rebuilt engine before installing it. I have all these basic questions about throttle linkage installion and checking the carbs for problems etc. Rather than pepper you fine folk with questions, does anyone have a good link or two to read up on? Thanks!
  10. The car money well ran dry when I purchased my 5er. Now I need to install this cam myself. At first I was apprehensive about this, but then I remembered that the whole reason I bought the O2 was to do this stuff myself. Time to stop being nervous and remember my origianl goals. The head is newly rebuilt so nothing else should need replacing. -How challenging would you rate this project? -Has anyone done a internet write up of this with pix? -Other parts that I should replace when putting this cam in? -Heavier springs? -Does the head have to come off the block? (The engine is newly rebuilt and out of the car) -Suggestions? A very good friend of mine is a mechanic, though a BMW one, but his knowledge should lead me through the general stuff, and he has some great tools at his shop. Cheers, mates!
  11. Those e12s are cool. Stock I think they tend to look a little frumpy, but the M version looked great (see the latest Roundel, http://www.firstfives.org/). I think that would be a great car to play with.
  12. Thanks for the great praise! You guys are too kind. I appreciate the advice on the leather care. Thats something I'm worried about particuarly as it's almost impossible to repair once ripped. It already has a the performance chip, and a short shift kit. The shocks were recently replaced, as well as the front control arms. I expect to replace the rear bushings within the next 10k. I appreciate your kind offer Al! Now that you mention it, I took a rock in the left fog light, and now it's lose in the housing and non-functional. If you have a spare . . . I would love to purchase it off you. If not, no worries, I'll just order one. But I always prefer to give my small businesses I trust when I can. Cheers, mates!
  13. I'm very happy to introducing our latest addition to the family: my spotless 535is. The last owner didn't really seem to want to let this one go, but through perseverance he finally relented. Man this car is really awesome. I understand now why they call it a smooth six. Great fun to drive, yet extremely civilized. The only thing that scares me about this car is what fantastic condition it's in. Somehow I'm going to have to maintain it, and I am not really sure how. Look at the engine bay! I have no idea how it looks that clean with 130k on it. Any advice on leather care is much appreciated. And any advice from other owners, past or present is also greatle appreciated. I bought my 2002 in 2002, and it's been in the upgrade and repair shop nearly the whole time, man it's great to behind the wheel of a BMW again. Enjoy!
  14. Just because we drive old cars doesn't mean we have to use old internet technology. I think this new board is fantastic, it looks great, is more organized, and I haven't experienced it being slow at all. I've accessed it from 4 or 5 different computers in just since it started, from my house, to work, to my friends house and it's always been fast. Leaving the board because it's too hard to figure out an avatar picture seems a little trivial to me. It's frusterating to learn new things sure, but anyone who can rebuild his own car can figure this out. Especially since we're all friends here, and there's plenty of help to be found. I guess I'm a little sensitive because I also build websites, and I appreciate that steve and company did this completely for our benefit, not for their own benefit or for money--this was charity on their behalf. It's hard enough when people in my company say my work sucks, but when people you are trying to help say that about what you did with hours and hours of your precious free time . . . well, it's hard to put words on that feeling. I love the new site. It's like an O2 with an s14: faster, sleeker, more modern and gets better mileage (when metaphors fall apart . . .). Thanks stevek (and all the others who helped that I am forgetting now), it was incredibly nice of you to guys to put this place together. I guess it also irks me when people announce their leaving the board--just a pet peeve of mine I suppose. Your post wasn't really pretentious, John. I don't mean to rag on you. You were just stating why you won't be around. But I remember when Keith made his 'great exodus' which was nothing more than than him saying that he was going to punish us by removing his prescence, which I found to be about as arrogant as could be. Ok ok, sorry to be another long-winded, pedantic, internet soap-boxer. Just was inspired with something to say.
