  1. I'm a few years into a project (1975 2002 with lots of rust repair now ready for a m20 swap) and am getting into the drivetrain + shifter/tunnel alignment. I have an AKG short shifter that I'm going to mount ~2 inches behind the original tunnel hole (but still far enough in front of the emergency brake). Now, I'm looking to figure out a shift selector rod to connect AKG shifter <> Getrag 260. I estimate I have about 4 inches between pins and wanted to see if anyone had opinions/thoughts on: - Is ~4 inches too short to get the travel I'll need (i'm planning to build a mock plate + 2 screws to make sure it'll go through the gears but this is much shorter than stock)? - Merits of a double shear selector rod (custom make myself or through Garagistic) vs attempting to shorten stock e30 rod vs using 2 heim joints and some adjustable center connector (see image). I'm leaning towards the DSSR route and have some concern a heim joint introduces too much "play". - Bill whatyearisthat.com --- Bay Area 1975 2002 project-- going for sleeper & highway/cruise friendly Stock m20, 3 core civic radiator, getrag 260 Chase bays brake delete Shortened driveshaft- Driveline service San Leandro, CA Catuned rear end w/ e30 3.73 diff GC coilovers & IE 15 inch wilwood kit TBD- wheels/tires, brake lines-chase bays e30 (i'm lazy), have good shape tobacco interior but might find tobacco recaros shifterarmandhomemadeDSSR copy.tiff
  2. Today, a friend and I managed to drop the rear subframe (the front came out last month). We decided on using a mixture of cinder blocks, 2x4's and jack stands before finding a more permanent way to lift the 2002 (pardon our amateur tactics). Next up is some rust repair-- driver frame rail, driver floor and spare tire well. We already have a m20 on a reinforced IE front subframe that'll go in some day. The plan for the next rainy day is to take inventory on all the bolts and bits to mate it to a getrag 260 I have in storage.

  4. Can you confirm if this kit is for a 2002 w/ a manual transmission tunnel? Thanks! -Bill
  5. Over the past 3 years, I've slowly overcome the rust cancer in my '02 and now that it's capable, I'd like to swap in an m20. I'm looking for something comfortable at highway speeds that has some I'd be interested in any lightly used parts for a reasonable price listed below: Big items: - Ground Control Coilover setup front and rear - 13 inch Wilwood front brake kit - Catuned or 2002underground rear that can hold a 3.73 e30 diff Other bits for the swap: - Dinan e30 chip - Kamotors cold air intake Please PM if you happen to have any of the above ^ Where I'm at now (building out a front end w/ m20 that can be swapped into my '02)
  6. I spent the better part of today battling the rear brakes on my 2002. It all started when I accidentally cut the rear brake line while welding in some new floor panels and patches a year back. I replaced the hard brake line and thought everything was going well until the rear right drum (running the IE big brake kit) start squealing and locked up last week. Based on some forums/articles, I suspected the rear flex hoses might be swollen, so I replaced both rear hoses today. I can't for the life of me get brake fluid to run from the reservoir to the rear brakes. I've tried with a hand pump on the rear drums bleeder valve and also tried by pumping the brakes. No matter how much I pump the brakes or use the hand pump fluid will not flow from the reservoir to the rear. My current plan is to try to run air through the line to see if there is a clog somewhere. My other guess is, I didn't assemble the pre-pressure valve correctly when I ran the new hard line and that's why I couldn't pull fluid into the rear brake system. I attached a sketch of how I assembled the pre-pressure valve. I'd be super grateful if anyone has any advice. I didn't have a lot of luck finding an answer in the technical article for bleeding or previous posts. Thanks! Bill Devine http://whatyearisthat.com
  7. Hey everyone-- @irdave mentioned this post and I wanted to say hi and thanks for the support! I bought a 1975 BMW 2002 in Portland in 2015 from a guy that said the rust damage would only be about $500 to repair. My 1st mistake was trusting him and the second mistake was not checking the lugs resulting in the rear left wheel flying off on the highway. 2 years later the car is back on the road with a new floor a friend and I welded in and we're tackling some left frame rail rot next. I created http://whatyearisthat.com as a way to share some of the subtle details that I love about the 2002. So far I've made tail light patches and a Fahrt Start Halt pin based on the ignition. I've been very thankful for all of the support from the 2002 community!
