  1. I can trim each one to make it work that's not a problem. These bushings are after market but still available through BMW. I wonder if the ones from BMW would be correct for the car without modification. +1 on putting the threaded end of the bolt up to avoid damage to threads.

  2. 2002 spring do not fit. Way to small. Bilstein makes HD shocks for the NK

Springs are available through BMW just go to realoem.com to find the part number

Having said that, are you sure you need new springs? It's rare that these ever need to be replaced unless it's broken. If you change the shocks to bilstiens your probably good to go.

  3. Well folks as usual nothing is as it seems with the old NK. All things simply turn into obstacles.

I ordered all new bushings for the front subframe some time ago. I went to check the assembly on these particular ones and it became obvious very quickly that they are much taller in height and will not work. Has anyone ever seen this?

I'm having the same issue with one side of the wishbone bushings (actually my buddy Rick is) being far to large in diameter. No way they would ever fit. I have heard of this problem on the forum a couple times.

Images show the original and the new.

  4. Thanks for all the input folks. I appreciate everyone taking the time to share their experiences and knowledge. I'm not 100% sold on the idea a 5 speed. I think ill drive with the 4 for a bit and see how I feel down then road.

  5. Diff is all done. There is nothing wrong with the hanger and the the bushings are fine. I'm putting this back together so I can drive it. I've already gone above and beyond what the cAr needs. I can always work on this car in the winter months.

  6. If you're super anal retentive....and paranoid....like me, you'll consider going the extra mile on that oil pump nut. It was a PITA to drill - even using a safety wire drilling jig....but I sleep better at night, knowing this little sucker ain't goin' nowhere.

80-89 in/lb is about right for nearly all 6mm (10mm head) fasteners. You can also google "standard tightening torques for metric fasteners" and find certain standard specifications.

    Very interesting...

  7. Putting the diff back together. Picked up all the replacement seals. Gasket on the top is NLA so I'm using black permatex to make a gasket. Waiting for the permatex to cure before I perform the finishing move.

Btw...I purchased 5 seals for less than the price of one from BMW. Rookie move ordering seals from BMW the first time.

  8. That looks perfect - hope they run right, have you had them running before?

Yes, they ran before I took it all apart. They were leaking fuel like mad when I removed them.

I'm taking my time with these to make sure every screw is turned to the "correct" starting position.

    Whatever the f that is.

I'm ready to tangle with the float level.

Insulators are a different color on each side....let it go...just let it go.

  9. What you have is a 240 5-speed.  It does have the mechanical speedometer cable input so can be used with your speedometer.  I don't know about using this on your NK but it can be fitted to the '02s.

Thanks, it won't make the cut. Besides, look how filthy it is.

  10. Is there a reason why I was able to remove one side easily and not the other. Not sure what you call this. Drive flange? Anyway I can't seem to get the other drive flange off the diff and I want to change the seal. it seems locked in there.

It would seem that I need a pulley with a support bracket to get this off. Odd how the other side just slid out by hand.

  11. The original rear oil seal I pulled off the longneck is 36x52x7. The one BMW calls for is a 36x52x9. Either someone has changed it in the past and used a different seal or BMW changed the spec somewhere along the line. I'm going with the 9mm.
