I would like to replace the seal in the gearbox but I can't seem to find a socket that fits. I just picked up a 27mm socket thinking for sure it was the right size but nope. 29 mm was too big to fit into the hole to reach the nut. It looks like there is a notched sleeve in there that I perhaps need to remove first?

Strange. Maybe the app is glitchy. I'll do a reinstall.

I'm so impressed with myself for making this bolt for some reason. Had to cut it down to fit as I was short one.
It's a NLA bolt folks. Put your orders in now I'm putting it back into production.

Here is the ever elusive early style rubber motor mount in its final resting place waiting to live out the rest of its days being hammered upon by constant engine vibration.
I can see why this was later redesigned.

All the image files are broken on my end?

That flywheel looks like it was pulled out of a camp fire.

That's impressive.

Go crazy and add a couple more mirrors too [emoji4]
That's a great picture! Love it

A friend of mine says to take it to RWM & Co in Delta. He says they do VERY good work.
Thanks again for the contact. Someone is coming to the house Tuesday to look at it and go over the scope of work. I'll keep you posted.

Check it out. Looks like a good buy at that price.

A little too Star-Wars like for me to actually do but it certainly shows creativity, haha
You could go hunting with this config. Maybe even help a few planes land in bad weather.

yup - if you're a nterested I can send you a pic in 3 weeks when I pay a short visit to North America and my car
Sure, if you remember 3 weeks from now to take a pic I'd love to see it.

I wonder if buying a restored 2002tii turbo a better investment in the long run.
abe
I would have to say yes to that but no where nearly as fun!

When my d/s mount failed I bought the IE poly - increased vibration slightly and eventually I had to have the metal re-welded. Worth doing IMHO cause any NOS rubber you might find would be compromised from age - it's been years since BMW made them.
IE told me they had no plans to reproduce in rubber but maybe they changed their minds?
I understand what your saying re: old rubber degrading over time. If it fails I can always go the poly way. I'm trying to stay away from all the poly stuff unless I'm left with no other choice. I'm looking for the least amount of vibration out of this thing. Vibration always makes me feel like something's wrong with the car and then I'll be chasing the cause and driving myself crazy.
Did you reinforce the metal with another piece of steel where the mount is connected?

Thanks, I'll look them up

I'd keep looking for rust. Rockers, floors, front foot wells, rear wheel arches, etc.
I suspect I'll find more.

I'm trying to find a shop here in vancouver that can / willing to do the body work and paint on the car now. It's the last thing to do before I put it all back together. I've been trying to find some decent fenders for it but not entirely convinced it's a must have provided I can find the right body person.
Attached are images of the most problematic areas. Front fenders!

I used methyl ethyl ketone and some steel wool to ultimately get it off.

It looks like the POR15 is on the surface that the wheel bearing seal rides on. Probably not the best situation. POR15 is hard but can be removed. I believe the company has a solvent to remove their product.
Yeah that's what I figured. I masked it off in the wrong spot. Thanks for confirming what I suspected.
I'll look into the solvent.

A while back I used por15 on the struts. I think I painted a section I shouldn't of. Can anyone confirm by the photo? If so, how do I go about removing it?

your good news for sunday is that these have been remanufactured by BMW and are available new:
https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/rubber-right-side-you-need-1-for-1-car-11-32-09.html
And just yesterday I ordered that same one from IE in rubber. I almost pulled the trigger on the poly one for the driver side. Glad I got it in rubber instead.

If anyone is interested I found the early style motor mount on eBay. If you think it's expensive, imagine how I felt when I converted it to cdn dollars.

Hmm. Sure looks like those are too thick. I believe NK are same as 02. I suppose you could try shorter tube spaces - not sure why that would be a problem.
I was actually wondering about that as well. I believe I've heard of people shortening the tube spacers. It rings a bell.
I did trim each bushing down as well btw.
