The stick on trim is easy to fit, get straight & will fool 99% of people from 6ft but it sticks like shit to a blanket & can remove paint when you try to remove it , 3m sticky stuff works .

There's got to be a solvent out there that will lift the 3M adhesive and not mess with the paint. In my early 20's I worked at a body shop for a summer and they had this thing the size of a hockey puck that was made out of a gummy tan rubber. The same material you see used as Clark's shoe soles. It'd chuck into a drill and pull the 3M badge tape up without messing up the paint... as long as you didn't stay in one place and burn it.

Of course you had to get the badge off first which wasn't too hard with some plastic pry tools.

When you check your prospective purchase out, take a look at the back side of the trunk and hood to see if the trim holes were welded shut, or just filled with Bondo or the like.  If you don't  want to reinstall the belt line trim and there's just filler, you should weld those holes closed or you're gonna have problems down the road.  On the other hand, if you do want to reinstall belt line trim and the holes are welded, that's gonna be a problem to drill out the welds.

BTW, with a little patience you should be able to assemble a decent set of used trim pieces that will be plenty nice for your stated goal of a daily driver...

    cheers

Ah yes, good call mike. I'll check there to see how the holes were filled.

For trivia night, Euro 1502's did not come with trim. EDIT: Beat by a minute!

Mucci, if you are buying, tread carefully.  A trim delete is a big red flag that the owner decided to cut corners.  It may be indicative of rust issues being glossed over.  A new set of trim costs around $1,000.  So while it certainly isn't cheap, it's not devastatingly expensive.

If you haven't already, have a thorough PPI done by a knowledgeable 02 mechanic.  There are a handful in Portland.

Oh this is by no means a pristine specimen. The PO rattle canned it flat black and it's got front end damage. But the price is right and it runs and drives solid. I'm going to likely strip it bare to see what's under there before respraying it the stock Mintgrun and driving it daily :) It's a project for sure. On the plus side there's no rust in the trunk or on the towers. Underbody looks 90% clean as well. We'll see what mysteries the panels hold...

If anyone has Portland area mechanic recommendations I'm all ears.

  4. Simple question I'm sure, but I'm a new owner. The car I'm buying has been resprayed and doesn't have any holes for the chrome body trim. I'm wondering if some models didn't come with the trim or if they've been filled in. It's a '75.

The previous owner mentioned that a full set of trim is big bucks but there are stick-on options out there. Does anyone have info / a link on the latter?

  5. I'm looking to pick up an 02 around the PNW area.

    No body damage.

    No electrical issues.

    Prefer manual trans.

Some mechanical issues are ok. I'm looking for a solid foundation that could use a little TLC.

Let me know what you have. Feel free to email or text photos if that's easier:

    Cool Bike, here you go!

Oh very cool. Like the Uber of car rentals. Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it's 650 miles from Portland and the PNW area as a trip destination is important. It'd be $1,800 just to get the car up and back, plus flights, not counting our actual trip. I'll keep an eye out on that site though, thanks for the link.

  7. Hey guys,

My girlfriend's turning 30 in February and I wanted to plan a little old-timey road trip along the Pacific coast. By that time we'll be living in Portland and I'm going to have to sell my cars before the move. She's in love with 02's so I'd love to be able to rent one for a week or so. I thought I'd reach out to the enthusiast community to see if there's any interest.

    The Trip

The idea is a road trip up the pacific coast with daily stops of an old-timey fasion: catching an event at a vintage theater, strolls through historic towns, vintage diners etc. I imagine it wouldn't be more than 7 days, and likely around 500-700 miles. I own a bunch of vintage vehicles and will treat your 02 with the same respect I'd give had it been my Grandfathers 02. No hooning. No back seat funny business. Just a week long "Sunday drive".

A bit about me since I'm sure you'd want to know who you're trusting your baby to:

I'm an Industrial Designer by trade. 30 years old. I've owned E30's / E28's for the past 8 years now. I've built an E30 from the chassis up before and run a business building custom vintage motorcycles. All this is to let you know I'm very in-tune with vintage machines.
