M54 would not be my first choice for a few reasons, but since you have it already I assume that's what you're going to use. I strongly suggest you tear the engine down and replace the rings before you install it. The M54 uses low-tension rings which are problematic and can lead to very significant oil consumption. I believe the fix is to use M52 rings, but you should look further into it before proceeding. Be careful with the head bolts, which like to break off in the aluminum block. If head bolt threads are damaged a Time-Sert is the only thing that works to repair the hole. Once you've got it apart, you're basically doing a full rebuild, but you don't want to go to the trouble of having the thing pouring blue smoke once you start it up.
If you decide not to do any of this, I can at least point to you a simple mod I developed that will mitigate the oil consumption.
The e46 only has 53,xxx miles on it. Live on small island of Maui, so hard to rack up miles like on mainland. Would this engine at this mileage really need the teardown? -

Another product to use I learned from an old small engine repair dude, which I thought would no way work for sealing threads is the red disc brake quiet spooge. Made by CRC

Those old Datsuns are pretty popular here on Maui, and man do they swap some crazy power in them. There is a dark blue in color like yours here that runs low 10’s, a true street sleeper.

Nice! Owned one many years ago. I loved the cockpit wrap around layout mostly.
Couldnt hurt to have a brake bomb hanging around in the event it goes out. Also, if you’ve never changed one, be prepared to skirt the edge of madness.

Oh man, I’m doing the same but with a turbo here shortly. Will a turbo even fit on exhaust side?
-
Back on topic....
Decided to use the e34 M50.
I’m sitting here trying to order all the turbo bits for the M50 and other items. Turbo exhaust manifold that will fit/clear towers on e10 and forward facing plenum, any recommendations?
I also have no flywheel or clutch components for the 5 speed. Seen some kits on eBay with varied stage ratings and lightweight flywheels. Any to avoid?

That's an awesome truck. We should rename this thread to "check out what I just bought!"
I also want to see more pictures of that thing once you get it!

Is way more rough than I anticipated but all there. Waiting on a shipping quote for some NATO tread 9.00x16 tires and innertubes.
For the time being I stashed it away in a 40’ container.

Has had a conversion to a 350 SBC with headers and 4 speed manual transmission. Still doubt it would top 65mph with the gearing.
Plan is to use for spearfishing and other water activities. At near sunset, back up to the beach, open the rear barn doors and lay in one of the 2 ‘beds’ and spark one up. Couple fishing poles cast out, steaks and fresh lobster on the bbq, ahhhhh...

People bring them, and find out it’s not easy making it here on Maui, then practically give them away just to get the money up to get out of here. Cost of living expensive. $7-9 gallon milk, $6 loaf of bread, $4.50@ gallon plus gasoline, so on, so forth. My 2002 costs $225 a year for registration alone.

Yeah, on second thought, what's wrong with an LS-whatever? VANOS can, to put it mildly, suck it.
I did briefly entertain an LS, but think it’s prudent to maintain an angry German accent exhaust note.

I was worried about the weight too, but after seeing that e30 V10 monster spanking everyone on the GT Board, seemed plausible. The guy hasn’t gotten back to me yet, so I dunno at this point. Car is only $5k and worst case I could swap it into my ‘86 e24.

Aloha, me again, heh. So, think an S85 V10 out an ‘09 M6 would fit? One for sale locally with a bad SMG? valve in transmission but have sourced one on eBay.

Nah, always burnt out to work on my own stuff usually, but chip away at them here and there. Right now as I post this I’m wrapping up the rust removal on this 91 F350 dump with an unbelievable 8500 miles. Hope to be done today. In a couple weeks going to pull both engines for the 2002.

So I drove that e46 yesterday I just bought to make sure it is worthy for the engine and because it only came with the valet key, shut down on me and refused to start. Had it towed back to my house and then had a BMW tech come over and clear out the codes. Turns out the immobilizer kicked in.
Will I need the ignition switch as well if I run the stock ecu? Getting a black key made for it on Friday.

Any reason a M54 won’t fit?

So I bought a 2000 328ci with a manual transmission...how about this engine? Runs perfectly and transmission is cherry.
Tomorrow I’m flying over to Oahu to work for the next 2 days and am going to try and squeeze in time to check out an M10 out in Kailua. Claims engine is good and will guarantee it.
