Are your spark plug wires on in the right order. Firing order is 1342. Watch the the direction the rotor is spinning and make sure a couple of wires aren't switched. That will cause your backfire

Make sure your battery is charged before going to the trouble of pulling the starter. Give it a bang with a hammer to see if that gets it working. Check your battery connections. You can run a simple test by trying a positive jumper cable right to the starter big terminal. Then try the starter. If it's bad consider replacing with an M3 starter. Nice upgrade.
