73 2002 Will Not Start After Sitting For 10 Years

Got 73 2002 last week and I have not been able to get started.

I cleaned the carb, cleaned the fuel tank, new plugs, new points, new condenser , new plug wires and new coil,

I cannot get any spark at plugs. Please give suggestions on what else could be wrong.

This is my first bimmer and is a project

I'm betting that you have a few wires switched up around the coil.

What color is your coil? Is it blue?

Changed back to old coil and it tried to fire up, now I have to set the distributer right I am getting major back fire through the carb.

Now the starter is stuck and just clicks now so I removed the starter and will have it checked

Are your spark plug wires on in the right order. Firing order is 1342. Watch the the direction the rotor is spinning and make sure a couple of wires aren't switched. That will cause your backfire

Make sure your battery is charged before going to the trouble of pulling the starter. Give it a bang with a hammer to see if that gets it working. Check your battery connections. You can run a simple test by trying a positive jumper cable right to the starter big terminal. Then try the starter. If it's bad consider replacing with an M3 starter. Nice upgrade.

Is your point dwell set right?

Had starter checked to and it is bad, new starter on Friday Friday night it will be time to start again...

I am sure we will have more questions as we go

The wire that you had going to the blue coil is most likely a resistor wire - correct me if I'm wrong here guys - the blue coils require an ordinary (non-resistor) wire going to the fuse block.

Put new starter on and now I got back fire through the carb, when I advance the timing it back fires out the exhaust.

I am sure that I have the distrib. set wrong, The number 1 cyl is the front cyl. correct?

I see the firing order on the valve cover 1-3-4-2

I did have the rear cyl at TDC by the finger test in the plug hole but I was getting major back firing through the carb and fire shooting out on the vacuum nipple on the intake

Sorry ask so many questions. But I am stumped and it is almost there on starting

Just got it started rough but running will still have to fine tune on timing and points, now to get the clutch working and the brakes all working, I am sure I will be asking more as I go

Thanks again for all of the information for a NEWBE

You need to get the front cylinder at TDC (piston at top of travel and both valves closed) so you can set your dizzy to fire at around that time to the #1 spark plug wire. You may have to pull your valve cover off to verify. That will get you close enough with the timing to get the motor running (presuming you have everything else right).

Thank all for the help, got it started and now the engine and trans is out and new parts are being ordered.

the other question that has come up is about the insulation on the engine compartment firewall, can this still be ordered or does everyone leave it off as the one on mine is pretty ratty looking and trying to clean up engine bay area
