Thank you to everyone who participated. We had a great show, lots of cars, fine weather and the wonderful folks who came out.
See you next year and hopefully at some of the other things we will have in between (like Not the 49 Mile Drive in December)!

Thank you to everyone who participated in Swap & Show Number 15 last Saturday, weather you brought your car(s) or simply walked the show and chatted a bit. We had more cars than at any previous Swap & Show, most of them quite nice and some of them very rare (especially #148, with only two 700RS cars in existence). The folks who come are always fun to talk to and some neat things happen, like when Steve Peterson offered to give Gil a key fob from the dealer who sold his tii to the original owner in Wisconsin.
I really like seeing all of the photos, too, helping to remind me of the fun we had. While I understand that Facebook makes posting easy, presenting them on FAQ will help focus the photos toward the cars we love. We are always delighted to see the photographs you have!
All of us want to continue improving Swap & Show and with this year's enthusiasm we anticipate even more next year. Watch for the announcement (and also for Not The 49 Mile Drive in December and perhaps some other events)!

Hi Lisa--
I'm sorry Tesoro will be missing next week; your blogs kind of made him part of the family. But I completely understand that getting the details correct for his restoration is more important that showing off at Swap & Show next week. While S&S-16 is not really in the planning stages yet, I bet we'll have one and Tesoro will shine there!
Of course, we will be happy to see you next week and maybe you will find a part to buy that will make Tesoro feel more represented. And when you pickup your bag you will get your shirt, die-cut sticker, pen and some other stuff that might make you happy, too!
See you on May 2!

The link to MotorsportsReg for preregistration is [http://www.motorsportreg.com/events/bay-area-02-swap-show-15-city-of-brisbane-marina-group-742575#.VNRPay7Abpg]. I recommend preregistration to save money (costs $25 instead of $30) and to give organizers some idea of participation. Of course, we'll take your cash if you wait until the event to register but it's easier to pay by card on Motorsportreg.

Brisbane responded this week, saying that 2 May is free for us to claim and we did!
You will be able to preregister on Motorsportreg starting 1 February 2015 (watch here for a link). This year the preregistration fee is $25, while if you wait to register on-site it will cost $30. Paul Huber has another of his clever T-shirt designs in progress right now, and with about 3 months to go planning activity is accelerating.
Check back soon for the link to Motorsportreg and plan to preregister early to help us order the correct number of T-shirts!

Event Title: Swap and Show-15 at Brisbane Marina
Event Author: layers
Calendar: View Event
Event Date: 02 May 2015 (Single Day Event)
BayArea 02 Swap & Show, 2 May 2015, Brisbane Marina. Preregister on Motorsportreg starting 1 February 2015 (watch this site for a link). Preregistration is $25 while the on-site fee on 2 May will be $30. For anyone interested, Bimmerfest in Pasadena is scheduled in late May this year. Graphic artist Paul Huber is again designing our T-shirt and volunteering his skills to make our event design look great. Please preregister early so we can more easily tally the necessary shirt sizes; preregistration cutoff date will be earlier this year. Register at MotorsportREG [http://www.motorsportreg.com/events/bay-area-02-swap-show-15-city-of-brisbane-marina-group-742575#.VNRPay7Abpg].
Note that Swap & Show visitors are welcome— if you have no car to show nor parts to swap, there is no entry charge. But we encourage anyone with a BMW of our vintage to display your car, no matter how beautiful your restoration or how mundane the dirt and rust on your daily driver. Swap & Show does not judge your car so there will be no points for extra dirt, missing dirt or glaring shine. Photographs and videos, however; are welcome!

Hi Stuart--
I am indeed interested in drives and social gatherings. While my personal participation may be spotty in the South Bay, I'm keeping my eyes open for events we can bring under the Bay Area 02 umbrella. At this point I do not know how that would work besides using Bay Area 02 in the announcement, but I'm very interested in developing a couple more drives or other events in our planning year (as you know, we now have Swap & Show and NT49MD). I'm keeping my ear to the ground to see what you have in mind and looking for ways we could let more interested drivers know about your plans (like, say, MotorsportsREG).
Happy New Year!

Hi Spike--
The date is still tentative since we have not yet heard back from Brisbane that 2 May is available. But at this point in the year you can probably pencil-in 2 May as the date if you realize that it is a planned goal as opposed to a confirmed date.

Hi Beck--
Thanks again for all of your work on this drive and for posting your photos and the Google route. I know I had fun and it sounds like everyone else did, too!

Hi Lisa--
We had about 15 cars participate today and all but a couple were 2002's. The rain was stopping about the time I left Walnut Creek this morning and the streets and freeways were wet all the way to Ocean Beach, but the weather was fine for our drive. But I'm very glad I brought a rag to wipe off the tables & chairs outside at Crossroads Cafe (Delaney St.) so we could enjoy the sun outside for lunch!

Hi Lisa--
That's using your noggin-- after getting your car ready for Not the 49 Mile Drive on Saturday you are about ready for another drive on Sunday! See you Saturday at Ocean Beach.

Event Title: Reminder-- Not the 49 Mile Drive on 6 December
Event Author: layers
Calendar: View Event
Event Date: 06 Dec 2014 (Single Day Event)
Just a reminder, Not the 49 Mile Drive will be on 6 December this year, starting at Ocean Beach across from Beach Chalet. See previous Events post and [www.bayarea02.com] for more details.

Hi Lisa--
BayArea 02 organizers have not yet selected a Swap & Show date for 2015, but we have not seriously discussed anything other than May. 2 May appears to be the most likely (between Mother's Day, Memorial Day and BImmerfest conflicts we do not have much choice).
It would be nice to finalize our date soon so we can get the date on everyone's calendar and start working on postcards and other logistics. And feel free to bring any questions along on Not the 49 Mile Drive on 6 December (hey, that about 2 weeks away!).

In case you have not looked at the Events Form recently, use this URL [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/159193-bayarea-02-not-the-49-mile-drive-6-december-2014/] to see details about Not the 49 Mile Drive on 6 December 2014. I hope to see many of you there!

Hi Spike--
Take a look at the GGC-CCA calendar [http://ggcbmwcca.org/events/month/], both November & December. The South Bay C&C was moved to 13 December (hey, the week after Not the 49 Mile Drive).

Hi JR--
I was also going to suggest Terry Tinney; Arne Carlson recommended his shop to me.
You should also ask Sean Casey, who with Tom Jones rebuilds engines per your specification.
I bought an MM 2200 engine for my late '73 (carb) that Sean installed in 2007. It worked pretty well but the cam was a problem; I could not tune it without electronically retarding the timing at idle. There were a few other little details I disliked, like lacquering the valve cover with Polaris paint. It cost about $6500 including installation. Paul Gommel has an MM engine in his tii that he seems to like; you might ask him for his opinion.
Larry
PS: they refused any core charge refund except for the 121 head that I negotiated before purchase.

NT49MD-2014— Not the 49 Mile Drive, Saturday 6 December in 2014
Not the 49 Mile Drive will arrive again in San Francisco! Join BayArea 02 on December 6 (1st Saturday in December) as we rally around San Francisco in our annual Not the 49 Mile Drive. We will meet at Ocean Beach as we have for a number of years (across The Great Highway from Beach Chalet on the West end of Golden Gate Park; Fulton St. is the cross street and the entrance to the Ocean Beach parking lot) between 9 and 9:30 AM. Following our driver's (and navigator’s) meeting, we hope to have all cars away by 10:00 AM. After a couple of hours driving the major, minor and surprising roads of San Francisco we will meet again at a restaurant for lunch and to review the photos that each car has numbered in the order observed during the rally.
San Francisco native and photographer Beck Diefenbach is developing our rally again this year. He knows many of the roads that San Francisco made famous and delights in finding the hidden treasures and beautiful views that encourage us to live in the Bay Area. We are also considering lunch options, possibly again on Treasure Island or perhaps another worthy restaurant.
Join us for the fun rally, see your friends, learn and enjoy some of San Francisco’s road history and share some BMW tales. Although you can drive solo, we recommend driving with a navigator (in Wells Fargo history, someone to ride “shotgun”). During the rally your navigator can number the photos we provide in the order you see them on the route. Kids are welcome to ride along and share lunch!
To see photos from last year's “NT49MD” rally, look at [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/148536-photos-from-the-n49msd/?hl=nt49md#entry959538]. Watch FAQ’s BayArea 02 Forum for the latest details [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/forum/30-bayarea02/] but be sure to mark 6 December on your calendar for the NT49MD-2014 rally!

ROADTEST--BayArea 02 bag
Hi--
Everyone registered at Swap & Show-14 received a blue bag. I've had mine longer that others so I have a few comments about it. First of all, it does hold a regular grocery store paper bag pretty well filled. The nonwoven polypropylene may seen a little thin, but it is pretty strong (do be careful how many rebuilt cylinder heads you carry in one, though).
One extra test I tried is the wash test. My bag came through the delicate cycle fine with the logo looking great, but there was a problem: the stiffener at the bottom turns out to be simple cardboard encased in polypropylene fabric. The wash left it in a few clumps of paper mache. I suggest removing the stifiner if you wash or seriously wet the bag. Or cut a layer of plastic (maybe a sheet of 60 mil polyethlyene that you might otherwise put below the new tile in your shower) as a more durable substitute.

Hi Brian--
Thanks for sharing your photos! I'm glad you had fun; I know I did.
We're pretty sure the NT49MD will again take us around San Francisco next December, and there could be a gathering or 2 before then. We expect to discuss future events at our debrief in a couple of weeks. See you and your 02 in coming months!

Hello Everyone--
I hope that all of you at S&S-14 had a great time; I know I did! It's a lot of work but very satisfying when we see over 100 cars on the lawn. And we really appreciate when friends chip in to help, whether inside the raffle tent, parking cars, picking up the inevitable trash (I'll blame that on the people walking through on the Bay Trail), and especially wrestling the canopies into submission when the wind threatened.
We have fingers crossed that the Brisbane Public Works Director sees as little lawn damage as I did (basically, mooshed grass that should rebound following the sprinkles' return to service); getting most or all of our deposit back would be very nice.
I also need to comment that someone found some keys that I turned in to the Marina Harbormaster. They appeared to be house keys with a green fob, bike key and electronic tab along with a bottle opener.
I'm looking forward to seeing some great photos posted to FAQ (here or in the general discussion) or with a link to a photobucket overflowing with images to make us smile. Again, thanks for coming and enjoying the cars, raffle, reverse sticker and especially the people!

Hi Bob--
I'll be leaving earlier than you, but I'll still see you in Brisbane. It looks like a nice day and we have a lot of preregistrations; we expect over 100 carsL

Hi Spike--
Carl Nelson was there last year with some parts. I'm not sure if he is driving up again this year, although his La Jolla Independent remains a Turbo sponsor. If he appears I'm sure you (or your brother) can discuss 700 parts with him. If that does not work for some reason you can e-mail or call him.
See everyone tomorrow!

Hi everyone--
Just a last instant reminder that preregistration closes today. You're welcome to come if you do not preregister, but bring $30 to show or swap. Still, observers are welcome at no charge. We have 79 registrations so far.

Hi Spike--
You can bring your car in any condition (well, driveable helps) and so long as it does not damage the lawn (another recent issue). If you have lightened your tii by removing some of the interior I do not see that as a problem. But I hope to see you (and your son{s}) with or without a car to show. Less than 2 weeks away and the shirts are enroute!

Hi Stuart--
Although I have not visited the Blackhawk Museum in a while, it is definitely worthwhile and a good place to take out-of-town visitors. While they have few BMW's, they have lots of concours-ready cars from the 1920's and 30's plus a large assortment of various-year cars. There are many one-off or custom-built cars. I recall seeing quite a few Rolls Royces starting from about 1906 and more than their share of Bugatti's. See[http://www.blackhawkmuseum.org/].
Another interesting museum is the Canepa Racecar Museum in Scotts Valley; it may be open by appointment only. See [http://www.canepa.com/collection/tour.html].
You can also see a listing of Bay Area museums on Wikipedia: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_museums_in_the_San_Francisco_Bay_Area].
But of course, you probably do not want to spend most of your time in museums, no matter how many interesting artifacts they hold. I figure you can do something different every day for 10 years within driving range of San Francisco.
