  1. More details are available and pre-registration is open on Motorsportreg [http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.advert/uidEvent/360477F3-AC31-A0F7-214243BFF3796B62#.Uuik9XmttFQ].  Pre-reistration saves money: we charge $20 on Motorsportreg but $30 to register on-site (and if you register on-site there is a possibility we will not have your shirt size, but we do try to order enough). More details are on the pre-registration page but the event card graphic gives the key details.  And feel free to post any questions that may arise so we can facilitate a great turnout!

  2. Is there a way that the Bay Area group communicates off the board?  An email distribution list perhaps?

    Stuart - South Bay/Cambrian Park/Willow Glen

    Hi Stuart--

In past years BayArea 02 had a Topica web group that shared e-mail comments etc. but that no longer accepts input.  Most of our communications is through this FAQ group where some BayArea 02 participants have set their options to get e-mail responses from certain posts or even the whole group.  We do have an e-mail list that Gil used just yesterday to announce the registration page on MotorsportReg for Swap & Show-14; that list, however, is 3 years old so we know many addresses are old and newer folks are not there.  We plan to update that list with this year's pre-registrations, but we primarily use it to announce NT49MD in December and S&S in May.  Gil also updated our website [bayarea02.com] (hosted by FAQ) Saturday with S&S-14 information and links.

I expect that this FAQ group will continue to be a key communications method for BayArea 02, while CCA events are available on their website (or by monthly -emails and the on-line Bombe).

  3. Bob, do you remember the thread on the drain cock that you found at Ace?

And jimk...I think what I used was a brass, tapered (pipe) thread drain cock, or possibly a brass pipe thread adapter, and screwed the drain cock into the adapter.  Brass is much softer than the block's cast iron, and apparently the threads were close, so that the engagement was tight enough for it not to leak (I did this somewhere around 15-20 years ago).

    Is the original bolt a 10 x 1.50 or 12 x 1.75?  Anyone know?

    mike

    Hi Mike--

The brass stop-cock is 3/8 pipe; it fits like BMW made it. See McMaster-Carr [http://www.mcmaster.com/#4921k34/=qiwvrg] where they charge over $7 now. Both times I made this conversion I bought 1/4 and 3/8, then took the 1/4 back.  Mike's idea to solder a 1/4" tube to the outlet, so you can attach a flexible hose when you drain, is great.  Even if it's a long reach to find the valve wings, with the tube you will not get a mess (unless the flexible tub does not fit the soldered tube).  This is one of those little great improvements.

  4. In case anyone is contemplating actually chrome plating aluminum bumpers, CoupeKing restored mine that way.  It looks pretty good from a few feet away but the finish has a few small waves and there are a couple of small chips.  The underside, however, has plenty of irregularities.  I'm not a fan of chrome-plated aluminum.

Thanks Bob and Scott for the photos.  By the way, these were taken at Swap & Show, coming up on 3 May in 2014.

  5. Initial posting-- Swap & Show 2014 will be on 3 May at the Brisbane Marina (as recent years).  For anyone concerned, this is BEFORE Bimmerfest at the Rose Bowl.

Later posting: We are well on our way to the event, now less than 6 weeks away.  We encourage you to preregistrer since it saves you time and money and also gives us a better idea about logistics.  In addition, some have asked about visiting without showing or swapping.  Yes, as before anyone is welcome to visit at no charge (without registering to show or swap), and there is plenty of free parking.  But we encourage anyone with a BMW of our vintage to display your car, no matter if it is a rust bucket or a beautiful restoration or any daily driver in between. To preregister on MotorsportsREG go to [http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.advert/uidEvent/360477F3-AC31-A0F7-214243BFF3796B62#.Uuik9XmttFQ].

BayArea 02 Swap & Show, 3 May 2014, Brisbane Marina. Preregister on Motorsportreg []http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.advert/uidEvent/360477F3-AC31-A0F7-214243BFF3796B62#.Uuik9XmttFQ].  As you will see there, preregistration is $20 compared to $30 on site on 3 May.  We have planning and coordination well underway and Paul Huber has developed his graphics for this year's T-shirt.  Please preregister early so we can more easily tally the necessary shirt sizes.

A reminder, with less than 6 weeks to go, preregistration saves you time and money and also gives us a better idea about logistics.  Also, some have asked about visiting without showing or swapping.  Yes, as before anyone is welcome to visit at no charge (without registering to show or swap), and there is plenty of free parking.  But we encourage anyone with a BMW of our vintage to display your car, no matter if it is a rust bucket or a beautiful restoration or any daily driver in between.

  7. Thank you to everyone who participated today in the Not the 49 Mile Drive rally!  I enjoyed seeing all of you, and after driving the route last weekend I know it was fun.

Remember to mark your calendars for 3 May for the Swap & Show.  We might have another gathering (drive) between now and then, but we do have the North parking area at the Brisbane Marina reserved for May 3rd.  Watch for an announcement to preregister on MotorsportsReg (as soon as we get it set up there)!

    Happy Holidays to everyone!

  8. Thank you all for your help! We made it home to Modesto. Great crew, great food and I appreciate all the hints, help, tools and the chase car to get me back on the road.

Thanks for coming and I'm very pleased to hear that you made it home OK!  I trust that Double 02 Salvage had replacements for the caliper mounting bolts you lost.  Did your kids enjoy the adventure?  It looked like they were pleased with the pizza!

  9. OK, my wife finally twisted my arm hard (and long) enough. I will give my decades of Road & Track Magazine to a good home.

I have not reviewed my collection in a while, but it starts before 1970. I know some issues are missing, perhaps up to half of a year occasionally, but I think most years are complete. I have decided not to hold any issues back but to scan a few articles I want to keep a copy of (like Henry Manney's drive of the DAF YP-408).

I would prefer to have the new owner pick up the boxes in Walnut Creek (94598), but if Rob Siegel wants reference material for his editorship he will get special consideration (so long as he does not use these to rebalance the weight distribution in his Porsche).

Send me a PM if interested.

  10. Talbot Talboval mirror with a green dot, well used but looks good. I do not know if this one came directly from Berlin or if I purchased it from an accessories purveyor about 1980. This mirror and its partner were on my car, as shown, until my accident; the partner did not survive. As you can see, the bottom between the mounting holes on the bullet body is slightly dented and there are 2 fine cracks. Fortunately the mirror is still rigid when mounted and the dent is not obvious. You can also see that the white polyethylene parts (separator between body and head; mirror retainer) deteriorated long ago and I used gray spline instead. The clear RTV makes sure the mirror glass stays installed. I would like $100 plus shipping for this mirror that Tom Jones calls "unobtanium (the car photo is one he took; it shows proper mirror placement). Send me a PM if you are interested.

  11. Not the 49 Mile Drive!  Join BayArea 02 on December 14 (2rd Saturday in December) as we rally around San Francisco in our annual Not the 49 Mile Drive.  As before we will meet at Ocean Beach between 9 and 9:30 AM.  After a couple of hours driving the eclectic roads of San Francisco we will meet again at a restaurant for lunch and to review the photos that each car has numbered in the order observed during the rally.

This is a family affair, so feel free to bring your family and friends (at least the ones who will fit in your car).  We recommend at least a navigator although sometimes people drive solo.

Look in the BayArea 02 Group section for more details: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/146242-not-the-49-mile-drive-2013-14-december/

  12. Coming up- Not the 49 Mile Drive!  Join BayArea 02 on December 14 (2rd Saturday in December) as we rally around San Francisco in our annual Not the 49 Mile Drive.  We will meet at Ocean Beach as we have for a number of years (across The Great Highway from Beach Chalet on the West end of Golden Gate Park; Fulton St. is the cross street and the entrance to the Ocean Beach parking lot) between 9 and 9:30 AM.  Following our driver's (and navigator’s) meeting, we hope to have all cars away by 10:00 AM.  After a couple of hours driving the major, minor and surprising roads of San Francisco we will meet again at a restaurant for lunch and to review the photos that each car has numbered in the order observed during the rally.

San Francisco native Beck Diefenbach is orchestrating our rally again this year, exploring the roads that make San Francisco famous and helping us find the hidden treasures and postcard views that make us delighted to live in the Bay Area.  We are also considering lunch options, possibly again on Treasure Island or maybe another delectable restaurant.

Join us for the fun “gimmick” rally, see your friends, learn and enjoy some of San Francisco’s road history and share some BMW tales.  Although you can drive solo, we recommend bringing a navigator (in Wells Fargo jargon, someone to ride “shotgun”).  During the rally your navigator can number the photos we provide in the order you see them on the route.  Kids are welcome to ride along and share lunch!

To see photos from some of a previous “NT49MD” rally, look at [http://www.bayarea02.com/events/12_03/12_03.html].  Watch FAQ’s BayArea 02 Forum for the latest details [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/forum/30-bayarea02/] but be sure to mark 14 December on your calendar for the NT49MD-2013 rally!

  13. This would be an interesting South Bay gathering; people who want to participate can reply here.  Stuart, do you have any preferred dates and times?  Responders can indicate their available dates and we can do a Doodle if the date is not obvious.

  14. My late '73 came from the factory (well, dealer) with a pipe plug in the fill port in the 4-speed transmission; I always used a 10" Crescent (adjustable) wrench to loosen and tighten it.  The 5-speed we installed later had a 17mm hex female plug, so I bought a 15mm-long bolt (I think 8mm has a 17mm head) and tightened a nut on it, then used the combo with a 17mm wrench (open or closed).  The transmission tunnel is so close to the fill plug that a normal 17mm Allen wrench will not fit.

  15. Hi--

Polyethylene (like Visqueen) should work fine but it is not easy to get glue to stick to it.  Tyvek sounds like a good idea, or thin vinyl sheet.  I would think that DAP tape or Strip Caulk might be too think for a good application.  I spray-varnished the back of my door cards decades ago to preclude damage after I deleted the Acella (but that was in Arizona).  A varnished plywood doorcard seems like a generally good idea.

  16. I used a number of Facet cube pumps on my late '73.  Early on (about 1980) a couple failed I think from using gasohol; I found diaphragm bits at the input.  Later I bought some from Whitney for a good price, but since they looked identical to Facet I assume they came from the Elmira factory.  I always used a pressure regulator and I think some of the occasional later failures (no pump sound and engine dies from no fuel; a few minutes later it starts right up) were due to a higher pressure pump cutting out.  My last Facet pump was a low-pressure Posiflow.  That pump fit exactly where the Cube pumps mounted and it worked flawlessly for years.

One final comment: I had a fuel system failure driving between the Bay Area and LA a few decades ago; I finally installed my spare mechanical pump along with the Facet and made it up the Grapevine.  I changed all fuel filters (before Facet, between polyethylene fuel line in engine compartment and larger fuel hose to Weber carb, and cleaned screen in carb) before traveling back along Route-1 with no problems.

I think a Facet pump located behind the gas tank is a wonderful upgrade, but a spare fuel pump is a great idea.  Oh, and pack a couple of wire nuts unless you have quick disconnects in place; they beat chewing gum!

  17. Hi--

I compared the parts when I bought new ones for my tii fuel pump and they are physically identical to the ones that came with my late '73 air filter (carb car, new from dealer).  In spite of the different part numbers these 6mm bolt rubber couplings are identical and next time I would buy the less expensive ones.

  18. Hi--

Here is the best way to mount Talbot mirrors, as shown on my late '73.  Thanks again  to Tom Jones for this great photo just a few hours before my accident.  After using small, flat Talbot mirrors (installed just a couple months after purchasing this car new) I migrated to convex tinted mirrors to help see more in the blind spots.  By the way, I'm getting the useable Talboval mirror ready for the classified section.

  19. Hi--

Maybe we need 2 drives: the first soon (like Sunday 8 September) and just a group driving across.  But the second later, when there is less apt to be congestion and to give photographer volunteers a chance to plan a good picture location on the bikeway or Yerba Buena Island or both.  Also, if the photographer is one of us he (she?) may need to have a friend (!) drive his car so he can take great photos.

I see nothing wrong with 2 gatherings (except the $5 crossing charge...) and I realize that careful planning can make a better event.

H'mm; I found the "Paste from Word" button and while my table looks OK to start, it gets imported without the table!  If anyone wants a PDF of the Word table send me a PM.  If Steve K. wants to insert this table in a good reference area I'll be happy to provide him the formatted data.

  21. Hi--

That drive sounds like a great idea, although I'm not exactly sure how the details would work.

If we follow Tom Richardson's suggestion we should make sure the photographer has a rapid response camera since dawdling for a photo op may be problematic (or even illegal).  The pathway should open sometime 3 September.

You might also consider a similar post (with a reference to this) on the BayArea 02 Group page to pickup someone in the Bay Area who skims past this one.
