  3. Hi Raj--

I agree with Tom, Roger Elle is familiar with 2002's and does a good job.  You may want to discuss his work with Paul Gommel; he and his wife Ann had Ann's Nissan-Z painted and it looked very good to me when I saw the car just back from European Enterprise (Roger even painted highlights on the wheels).

Some people also look at Andy Schank's painting (see [http://www.bayarea02.com/toolbox/index.html]  for contact details); he has been considered less expensive for decent painting.

I encourage you to visit any paint shop you are seriously considering.

  4. Hi--

I bet you have seen Aardvark Racing's chrome bumpers.  I'll give Dave Varco a plug since he is a Swap & Show sponsor.  I do not know what rechroming costs these days (it's been years since I had a bumper rechromed; in spite of 2 trips to the plating shop I eventually replaced the rechromed bumper with a new rear center section for about $50), but if you look at the quality and total cost (including tax & shipping) the ones Dave sells may be competitive.

Good luck and keep us posted on your results!

  5. BayArea 02 Needs a New Rallymeister

Unfortunately, our previous Rallymeister, Beck, sold his tii so we are looking for a new person to organize our rallies.  If any of you is interested, or know of someone who might be interested, please respond to this post.

What qualifications will make a good BayArea 02 Rallymeister?  We would like:

v     First of all, someone who wants to help us find the hidden treasures and postcard views that make San Francisco an interesting and eclectic place to call our home.

v     Someone who is good at maps, especially Google Maps or equivalent, to lay out and document a route.

v     We prefer someone who actually lives in San Francisco or who grew up here, although "adopting" the City is also good.

v     Photographic skill is helpful but not required (we can find people to take route photos, although very few of us are as good as free-lance photographer Beck).

To see photos from some of the previous “NT49MD” rallys, look at [http://www.bayarea02.com/events/12_03/12_03.html] and [https://www.bmw2002faq.com/forums/topic/174801-2015-bay-area-2002-not-the-49-mile-scenic-drive/#entry1079809].

UPDATE: Pete Petras accepted the position as our new Rallymeister.  We're finalizing the date for NT49MD-17 right now (3 Nov), but expect it to be on 9 Dec.  Watch FAQ for an announcement.

  6. Hi Bebe--

I like the LED's from Superbright LED, but understand that many they call "194 replacement" are actually too large diameter to fit your instrument cluster.  Look for a diameter no larger than 10.0 mm.  But realize that if just 9 or 15 lumens are availalble, the tach could be pretty dim.  Colored lamps (blue. green, red and amber) do not need so much light output, and realize that the lens color will make no difference in the light color since the color is just what the LED produces.  Some CANbus lamps may fit and they should work fine; they just draw more current so that a bulb-failure indicator (as in a newer car) will not tell you the reduced current to drive an LED is a failed bulb (they add resistors for load).

  7. Hi Magnus: Thanks for starting this thread and adding your photos-- you have some nice ones!

I encourage others to add their photos, or to start a new thread in the Swap & Show gallery for S&S-17.  Photos help us remember some of the good times, and also to see some of those more interesting variations of our cars, so post away!

Also, thank you to all of you who were there!

    Hi--

That's Gil's car. I'm not sure he is active on FAQ but he is our BayArea 02 registrar so you can simply go to the Swap & Show registration page on MotorsportReg and "Contact the Host".

  9. Recently at Legends, the Michelin rep told me that they make about 1 run per year of 165-13 XAS tires for Coker.  Make sure that you are sitting down when you see the prices!

My local tire store, last time I asked a few years ago, told me they could find about 15 types of 165-13 tires.  I will confirm that a 185-70_13 tire on a 5" rim will NOT fit into a 2002 trunk without pushing up the spare cover.

  10. BayArea 02 Swap & Show, 6 May 2017, Brisbane, California Marina. Preregister on Motorsportreg (watch this site for a link).  Preregistration is $25 while the on-site fee on 6 May will be $30.  Graphic artist Kile Brekke is again designing our T-shirts and printed materials— his designs are quite popular among our 02 groups!  Please preregister early so we can more easily determine the shirt sizes to order.  We will have a named bag for each preregistrant so our closing date is earlier than some years past in order to organize the bags.

Note— Swap & Show visitors are welcome!  If you do not show your car or swap parts, there is no fee for entry.  But we encourage anyone with a BMW of our vintage to bring your car to display, no matter how beautiful your restoration or how mundane the dirt and rust on your daily driver (some photographers we know can make the rust and dirt very photogenic— check out some photos from previous years!).  Swap & Show does not judge your car so there will be no points for extra dirt, missing dirt, matching luggage or concours shine.  We smile at all BMW's, and photographs or videos are welcome!

To register, go to [www.bayarea02.com] and follow the link or go directly to[MotorsportReg pre-registration for Swap & Show 17 on 6 May 2017].  Some of you found this web location already; now everyone can!

  11. Hi everyone--

Here is the photo key that Steve Vonk is looking for, with named photos.  When you see "Number xx" below the photo, "xx" is the order number.

For those of you who missed the NT49MD rally, I'm also attaching the rally instructions and un-numbered photos (with the Sloat turn adjusted).  This would be a good drive for any guests you have, in case they want to see The City from a perspective that does not include Pier 39.

Any news for a 2017 date yet? ;)

Lisa, we have submitted a permit request to Brisbane for 6 May 2017.  But they do not yet know the permit fee so I have not sent them any money.  But I think we have first dibs on that date.  I hope to hear from them soon and post a first announcement next month, but feel free to put that date on your calendar.

I'm sorry that Tesoro did not make NT49MD rally today; maybe he is allergic to rain!

    Larry

  13. Thank you to everyone who turned out in spite of the rain.  We had 14 cars total (including mine).  If anyone has photos, please post.  I understand, however that rain is both inconvenient for taking photos and for finding gorgeous vistas (although there were some when I drive the route last Sunday and when Beck took photos yesterday afternoon).

I will note that Beck is stepping down as Rallymeister, so a hardy Thank You! is in order for his fun rally's.  Also, we are looking for his replacement.  I am especially looking for a San Francisco resident, even better a native San Franciscan,  If any of you is interested, let me know (the sooner the better, although next December is a whole year off).

  14. Hi--

We have seen SantaCon participants on previous NT49MD rallys, since they often pick the 2nd Saturday in December for their frolic. They were pretty winded trotting up Twin Peaks a couple of years ago.  My recommendation is simply to look out for the conspicuous red-suits, especially since they may be on their way to a drunken stupor.

  15. Hi--

Brian is correct.  We will have all cars underway by 10:00 AM and I drove the route a couple of days ago in just under 2 hours. I'm not the fastest rally driver so I anticipate some arrivals at the restaurant by 11:30 AM (or even sooner if turbo owners decide that San Francisco streets were not built for autobahn chariots).  You are not required to stay for lunch, but I encourage all participants to stay and chat over lunch.  You are free to leave as you desire.

The weather guessers are now guessing for clearing on Saturday morning but they can change their mind anytime.  We will drive rain or shine but there are some steep hills that require 1st gear and careful clutch work so be careful.

I noted San Francisco posted that the Hayes St./Van Ness intersection will be closed this weekend.  If you typically drive across town on Hayes, you might consider
    Fell St.
    instead.

    See you Saturday at OceanBeach!

  16. Not the 49 Mile Drive, the BayArea 02 annual rally, appears in San Francisco again on December 10 (2nd Saturday in December).  Meet at Ocean Beach between 9 and 9:30 AM across The Great Highway from Beach Chalet on the West end of Golden Gate Park (just like previous years).  Fulton St.is the cross street and the entrance to the Ocean Beach parking lot.  Following our driver's meeting, we plan to have all cars away by 10:00 AM.  After navigating roads throughout San Francisco we will gather again for lunch at a restaurant and review the photos in the handout that each navigator numbered during the rally in the order observed.

San Francisco native Beck Diefenbach is our rallymeister again this year.  He delights in finding the hidden treasures and beautiful views that reward us for living in the Bay Area, and the unique and interesting paths to get there.

Join us for the fun rally, see your friends, learn and enjoy some of San Francisco’s road history and share some BMW tales.  We recommend driving with a navigator, so the driver can drive and the crew can give turn instructions and watch for the rally images to number them in viewing order. Solo drivers are also welcome, although there could be a navigator or two available before drivers get underway. If your 02 is under the weather, drive your other BMW on this rally. Kids are welcome to ride along and share lunch!

Watch this Forum for the latest details (also see [www.bayarea02.com] and for photos of last year's drive [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/174801-2015-bay-area-2002-not-the-49-mile-scenic-drive/#entry1079809]) and be sure to mark 10 December on your calendar!

for the turn indicators, so that there is enough resistance so that it does not give a false "burn-out" positive, correct?

    TIA!!

    Justin

    Hi Justin--

Either Superbright LED bulb should work for your brake lights; I only have experience with the 1-highpower-LED bulb, but the bulb with SMD (surface-mount LEDs) will probably be fine, too.

Why do you want an LED bulb for the reverse lamps?  I rarely drive in reverse, so the OEM incandescent bulbs last about forever.  And I'm not a fan of the "blue" bulbs with Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) above 4000K, but that is your choice.  I agree, however, that if you want more light to backup, without the heat generation and lens-melting potential of a 50 Watt halogen bulb, an LED bulb might work for you,

I have no recommendation about the EBay bulbs since I have never seen them.  LED bulbs are only as good as the manufacturer, and while Cree makes fine LED chips, the company that assembles the package may well shortchange the LED-driver and heatsink design in a way that compromises light output and LED life.  The key is to buy from a company you trust and that has excellent customer support for when you have a problem.  Frankly, I would select the SuperbrightLED 1-highpower-LED bulb with reflector in amber for the rear turn and the 1157 (BAY-15D base) version for the front turn/parking lamps.

Also, why are you concerned about resistance?  Our cars do NOT evaluate lamp current to give a bulb-out indication and the OEM flasher, or most aftermarket flashers, will work fine.  If the flasher is a problem, both SuperbrightLEDs and your local autoparts store have electronic flashers that will work as a replacement.

The only reason I consider a CANbus LED bulb is if the other LED bulbs are too large to fit.  For example, a 194 T3-1/4 bulb fits fine in your Tach but most LED bulbs are too fat.  But SuperbrightLEDs sells a 5-SMD CANbus LED bulb that will probably fit (they no longer sell the open circuit-board bulb that you can weasle down into the mounting hole).

Have fun with your new bulbs!

Larry, do you have any photos of your set up?

Also, do you have a bulb reference number for the 60 lumen red LED for the tail light? Would that be #1156 with just a different lumen output or do I need a different bulb type? This is all very confusing. Especially for a roundie as I believe they spec different bulbs between the brake and tail lights.

    Thanks, James

    Hi James--

I do not have photos of my LED retrofit bulbs, and photos might be a bit confusing.  I know that a photograph can be good to illustrate a lighting application but it can also be poorly adjusted to "show" what is not the actual situation.  But for this specific application, Superbright LEDs no longer sells the turnsignal and taillamp bulbs I have.

As I look more closely at the bulb in Paul Wegwiser's link for a #67 LED bulb at Superbright LEDs, it is more than a bunch of LEDs firing on-axis.  The overview tab says there are 9 LED's aimed toward the side and it says the beam is 210 degrees.  It would seem this could be a good taillamp bulb but without seeing it in operation I'm not really sure.  Remember, the OEM incandescent bulbs for our cars are 460 lumen 21 Watt for stop & turn but 50 lumen 5-Watt for a taillamp (a lumen does not know if it is omnidirectional or if it is focused in an intense narrow beam).  If you use an 1156 bulb or 1073 or 7506 or it's LED equivalent for a taillamp, everyone around you would think you are continuously stopping or your flasher is broken or you have a red rear foglamp (like a late model SAAB driving with foglamps everywhere) or you are using your brake pedal as a footrest.
