  1. I had good luck a few years back at  Rite-Way Wire & Wheel, 1119 Alpine Rd, Walnut Creek, CA 94596.  It cost $175 to straighten a chromed (!) E39 aluminum rim.  They also charged $70 about a year ago to dismount & remount 2 tires and clean the rims to make a good bead seal (it's disappointing to find a flat tire in your garage...).  Expect to see a Ferrari or Porsche in the 2 or 3 parking spaces in front.

The problem with the style you linked Paul is that they don't scatter the light so all you get is a round dot in your tail light instead of a whole glow like the incandescent bulb gives. For retrofits you need something that fires in a all directions. I personally haven't been all that impressed with the ones that I have tried.

I'm using Superbright "1156 LED bulb - 1 High Power LED w/Reflector Lens - BA15S Retrofit" [.superbrightleds.com-tail-brake-turn/1156-led-bulb-1-high-power-led-w-reflector-lens-ba15s-retrofit] for my square-tail brake lights and I recommend them.  As quoted, many LED arrangements can provide outstanding intensity (candlepower) on-axis (or as we said in the test lab, "H-V") but the intensity for side viewing could be poor.  I visually checked my brake lights from the side and at higher and lower angles when evaluating these bulbs and those angles are always brighter than the higher output (45 MSCP) incandescent bulbs I was using.

These bulbs would also work well for turn signal bulbs but frankly are too bright for taillamps.  Note that a wide intensity distribution is also necessary for other signalling and marking lamps.  A 60 lumen red LED with a wide intensity distribution will work fine as a taillamp.  Note that a colored lens will filter out lots of white light to get red or amber light for signalling but selecting a red or amber LED will use the light much more effectively since unwanted wavelengths are not there to begin with; be sure to select the proper color LED for it's use.

Also, I will note that since my sidemarker lamps fell off during restoration (I agree it looks better but sidemarkers add safety) I bought some amber and red retroreflective tape from Napa and put a strip of amber inside each front signal lens and cut a strip of red to put on the side of the internal reflector in my square stop-turn-tail lamp assembly. By adding a tiny red LED facing the side near the bottom of that reflector, I now have at least modestly effective sidemarkers without the external lamps BMW used to meet US requirements.

What was the final tally of cars and attendees?  LOVE that picture of the BEEMER.  Someone spent a ton of time detailing that bike.

    Hi Jim--

We tallied 114 '02's and there were about a half dozen other period cars like coupes and NK on the lawn.  I think there were a few other period cars in the paved lot (some people just want to walk the show rather than enter their car).  I guess we may have had 120 or 125 cars total (some leave early, others arrive late).

    Yeah!  Come on people!  :)

I recommend a little patience.  Let's give Bob a chance to edit his digital photos and Kile some time to get his film developed (he did not say if he uses B&W or Fujichrome in his Bronica...).  But I'm just as anxious as everyone else to see photos of our fun day yesterday, even though I did walk around the hundred or so cars that braved the (light) rain and spoke to lots of super, smiling people.  And THANK YOU to everyone who participated with their car and/or volunteered to help make this a fun event!

  5. Hi Burndog--

I expect you will park in the paved lot behind your parts.  We do not want groups of parts on the lawn.  However, if you make a friend there to provide additional parts/car supervision you could have more options.  I'll let Tom Jones, Parkingmeister, evaluate your situation on Saturday.

See you at the Brisbane Marina!

  6. Hi bianchini--

We have the same setup as last year, in the same location.  Your first stop is the registration table to pay your fee and sign the waiver.  They will direct you to the parking area where you can lay out your parts.

  7. Hi everyone--

We have over 100 pre-registrations, suggesting this could be our largest Swap & Show ever!  All of the planning and coordination is falling into place, with just a couple of glitches to iron out.  The TV weather-guessers seem to say the rain will be over on Friday, although one or two keeps a slight chance for a few spits of precipitation in the North Bay on 7 May.  Even though my car has a fresh coat of wax, driving around on Thursday and Friday is apt to leave some spots-- good thing we do not judge the cars!

  8. Note that BMW alloy wheel lug nuts (36131113132) are made from steel but have a larger wheel contact surface than the lug nuts made for steel wheels.  I think the angle of the contact surface is different from the steel-wheel lug nuts, too. Curt Ingram always suggested getting alloy wheel lug nuts to use with aluminum wheels, since the steel-wheel nuts could over stress the alloy wheel mounting area.

  9. Hi Steve--

The Brisbane Marina's official address is 400 Sierra Point Parkway, Brisbane, CA 94005, which is the marina building with office.  While we both know to drive to the Northeast corner of Sierra Point, we of course know there is no street address for that parking lot.  I'm fine using the Marina address and rely on signs for the last few hundred feet.  And I'm not in a rush (yet...).

Thanks for your help; making changes is usually frustrating and always an effort!

  10. Hi Steve--

You may have noticed I added S&S-16 to the SF Calendar today.  As I looked at your overall calendar I noted that today's post to the SF Calendar is in addition to the existing overall post, so it is redundant there.  Realizing how few events are in your overall calendar I consider an SF Calendar very low priority (especially since I did not realize when composing my post that I had to provide location twice, once to post and another time for the map.  I did not see a way to change the map from Alabama to Sierra Point.). We can simply look at the overall calendar and our events should be pretty obvious.

But adding any SF Bay Area Calendar post to the Bayarea 02 Forum is probably a good idea.

BayArea 02 Swap & Show, 7 May 2016, Brisbane, California Marina. Preregister on Motorsportreg starting 16 February 2016 [Register for Swap & Show-16].  Preregistration is $25 while the on-site fee on 7 May will be $30.  Graphic artist Kile Brekke (you may have met him at some of our events) is designing our T-shirt and printed materials this year-- he is very skilled!  Please preregister early so we can more easily tally the necessary shirt sizes.    We plan to have a named bag for each preregistrant so the closing date is earlier than some years past to let us get the bags in order.

Note— Swap & Show visitors are welcome!  If you do not show your car or swap parts, there is no entry charge.  But we encourage anyone with a BMW of our vintage to bring your car to display, no matter how beautiful your restoration or how mundane the dirt and rust on your daily driver (some photographers we know can make the rust and dirt very photogenic!).  Swap & Show does not judge your car so there will be no points for extra dirt, missing dirt, matching luggage or brilliant shine.  Photographs and videos are welcome!

  12. I have a pair of Konig seats I bought new over 30 years and hundreds of thousands of miles ago.  I'm partial to them as they really helped save my life in my accident.  Also, when I occasionally strain my lower back muscles, these are the most comfortable place to sit I've found.

After my accident I had the seats rebuilt (the driver's was a little sprung as it held the roof off of my head) and removable covers made to match the schwartz interior of my replacement tii, even though the original cloth is still pretty good,  That cost about $400 and I think it was well spent.  You may find that you really do not want to sell this seat after all!

  13. Hi--

When I purchased my tii in Missouri we transferred the ownership with a bill of sale and signed the proper places on the title.  I drove back through Texas (it was January, and the only salt I drove on was in Oklahoma) and had to locate and correct a number of non-watertight items (pedalbox foam missing, door gaskets leaky; the PO said he never drove it in the rain!).  Back here, Sean Casey found many corrections to make, like a loose front subframe, in spite of my paying a former BMW mechanic to inspect the car!  You can see in the photo that I had Missouri plate(s) until I visited the DMV where they exchanged the Missouri plate for theirs.

If you feel naked by driving without a plate, maybe your local car dealer will loan you a couple of his cardboard advertising plates to fill the license plate frame.  At least that suggests you know you do not have a real plate installed!

  14. Hi--

The DMV website has some helpful discussions about registering an out-of-state vehicle [http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/dmv/vr/buyingandselling].  I last followed this procedure about 6 years ago when I purchased my '74 (73) tii and brought it back to California from it's home near St. Louis.  I needed the last registration, title reassignment and a bill of sale (DMV has a form- REG 135).  Note that you are apt to pay California Use Tax upon registration, basically sales tax based on what your bill of sale states that you paid.

You will eventually need a smog test.  I assume your future Volvo has a gas engine so is 50-state compliant (some diesels are not and can never be registered in California).  Note that if the odometer says less than 7,500 miles you can not register it; they want to prevent gray-market cars or garage queens.

  15. Hi Max--

There are a few body shops shown on [http://www.bayarea02.com/toolbox/index.html].  The list is a bit old but at least some are still around.  Andrew Schank was an inexpensive paint shop and I know at least one person who had a car painted there.  I do not know if he is up to rust repair, though.  Michael Dubois has his shop in Hollister, but his business is mostly accident repair (and he sold his tii...).

  18. Hi Mike--

Here in California we're jealous of your 93 octane premium.   Chevron et al tells us that 91 octane, which I consider very good regular, is premium.   Of course, they add plenty of Techron (at a CCA tech session a while back we saw, among other things, some M10 engines they use to verify compliance to the BMW detergency test; they were being rebuilt between tests) but the moderate octane reduces timing and fuel economy options.

  19. Thank you to everyone who drove or even stopped by to see us off.  I had fun helping to organize this annual rally and seeing and talking to all of you who participated.

Also, thank you to our Swap & Show sponsors, whose generosity for our last Swap & Show provided the funds for our lunch at Crossroads Cafe on Delancey St!

Please post your photos or a link to your photos on the Bayarea02 Group pages here in FAQ so we can see them and smile as we recall the drive and lunch.

    Happy Holidays to ALL!

  20. The NT49MD rally is just a couple of days away.  The weatherpeople are saying we will have DRY weather, which is good (we drive rain or shine, but seeing and navigating is easier without rain).

Remember, meet in the Ocean Beach parking lot, across from Beach Chalet, between 9 and 9:30 AM.  Kids are welcome if you want to bring yours.  If your 2002 is not ready for a romp around San Francisco we do accept people driving other cars, but of course, we prefer BMW's.

We have our route ready, with one last drive check, and Beck is collecting photos for all to put in order.

    See you Saturday!

NT49MD-2015— Not the 49 Mile Drive, Saturday 12 December, 2015

Not the 49 Mile Drive, the BayArea 02 annual rally, appears in San Francisco again on December 12 (2nd Saturday in December). As long as I can remember we have met at Ocean Beach and we will do so again. As usual, meet between 9 and 9:30 AM across The Great Highway from Beach Chalet on the West end of Golden Gate Park. Fulton St. is the cross street and the entrance to the Ocean Beach parking lot. Following our driver's meeting (navigators and family welcome), we plan to have all cars away by 10:00 AM. After discovering the major, minor and surprising roads of San Francisco we will gather again for lunch at a restaurant and review the photos in the handout that each navigator numbered during the rally in the order observed.

Beck Diefenbach, a San Francisco native and a free-lance photographer, is creating our rally route again this year. He delights in finding the hidden treasures and beautiful views that reward us for living in the Bay Area, and the unique and interesting paths to get there.

Join us for the fun rally, see your friends, learn and enjoy some of San Francisco’s road history and share some BMW tales. We recommend driving with a someone riding "shotgun", as Wells Fargo would say (navigator in rally parlance), so the driver can drive and the crew can give turn instructions and watch for the rally images to be numbered in viewing order. Solo drivers are also welcome, although there could be a navigator or two available before drivers get underway. Kids are welcome to ride along and share lunch!

To see photos from last year's “NT49MD” rally, look at [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/160712-not-the-49-mile-drive-pic-1262014/] and [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/160762-not-the-49-mile-scenic-drive-photos-and-route/]. Watch FAQ’s BayArea 02 Forum for the latest details [http://www.bmw2002faq.com/forum/30-bayarea02/] but be sure to highlight 12 December on your calendar for the NT49MD-2015 rally!

  23. Hi Steve--

BayArea 02 has asked Brisbane for 7 May for Swap & Show-16.  While Brisbane has not set their fees yet so our application is somewhat tentative, I have every expectation that 7 May will be the date.

Also, we're eyeing 12 December for the Not the 49 Mile Drive in December (2015).  This may be before your calendar starts but feel free to include it if you have an appropriate palce for it.
