When I first started looking at 2002s in the early 1990s, there was no interest in the NK cars, save the TISA. Hence, lots of them haven't been maintained that well. It seems like only in the past few years has there been any interest developing in the NK cars, and even then, I think it's limited to a certain few who are serious/deranged enough to buy them. Parts availability may also be a factor.
I've considered buying a few NK cars that are sorta out of the mainstream, came real close to making an offer on the gray one that Mike bought, but the green one that Roger ended up with is the only one I liked enough to try to buy. I get the feeling there are still quite a few out there, but again, because of the still-limited appeal, poor condition and different versions, they don't always show up here or are easily remembered. I also think that since many of the cars seem to need work to make them drivable or look nice, they aren't going to fetch high dollars, so the sellers aren't motivated to try to sell them.

Looks like it simply needs attention in some areas from someone who knows what they are doing. I lived near the ocean just south of SF for four years, the rust does exist out there and even farther inland because of rain and condensation. Rust they get will be from rain and moisture getting into places where it can cause problems, but not nearly as aggressive as the salt-caused rust we have in other parts of the country.
The car is almost 40 years old, and that needs to be taken into consideration, too. Probably not a bad deal given the background info that comes with it and the general appearance as it is. I'm thinking it would be a good deal in the 5-6k range, but then I'm a bottom feeder.

Wish it was closer to the USA!

Knowing this is indeed Emily, there is no question about the build quality. It is one of the nicest restored cars I've ever seen. I too was confused by the missing ti airbox and thought the mirrors were also farther forward.
I am surprised that the broker chose to represent it as a 2002ti, when it clearly isn't one, and not mention the car was owned and lovingly restored by a long time enthusiast and restoration professional.
This car will be a great deal for whoever buys it!

Lousy tribute. Looks to be a fairly nice 2002, probably a better car than the vague and schmaltzy ad describes. Surprised they didn't put in a 5-speed....why? Someone on this board probably knows more about the car and it's previous life, wonder what they can tell us.

Fake!
Note the US dash, later gauges, no clock, long console, 12 fuse fusebox, no airbox mounts, later VIN tag...
I'm disgusted, they could have at least made a halfway decent effort for all the money they spent. Who knows what else wasn't done right? How well does it run with the Webers? Are there pics and documentation of the "restoration"? And they're asking how much?
I don't think this is Emily...and definitely worth a very careful looksee before anyone pays anything. High dollar spent is no indication of quality.
Happy New Year!

Nothing else is known yet, but the date and location is a start!

Martin Meissner has a white one that is almost as nice as David's. Almost is vague, lol! Martin also has a very nice silver touring.

Maybe it's my computer or old eyes, but the car looks like it's more of a pale yellow, closer to Dakar than the tennis ball color that is Golf. I agree that warrants real close inspection. These independent car dealers are tough to trust....
I should go visit it sometime....

Looks good, Mike! I came so close to buying that car and the parts stash, but having followed all the work you've done, I'm happy you bought it. I've always like the NK cars and really wanted to buy the Florida car. Maybe one day I'll find another one I like.... Keep us posted so we can live vicariously through you!

Hi Jon,
Yes, great seeing you and the ti as well! The rally was fun, though we were running non-comp.
Mine is back in it's garage, washed and nuzzled up against my sidecar rig. Entire trip was uneventful, ran fine.
I think next year I'll give it a rest and take something else.
Great trivia question about the member in the picture, I won't spoil it, but I know them both well....
I've tried to attach a picture of the last time two tis were together at Oktoberfest 1988.

Certainly looks real, no question there. More detailed pictures and information would be really needed to interest any serious buyers, especially if they are in the USA due to transport cost.

I'm going as well, and it looks like I'll be caravaning with Dave. Not sure if I'll be taking the 2002ti or the abandoned 535is project. Ti is pretty much ready to go, 535is has steering and brake issues that I need to fix, but it would be cool to take a different car on a much needed road trip and have the time to give it some love at the event.

There are many interesting pictures on the Riverside Raceway Facebook page, even some with BMWs!

Windy City BMW Vintage Fest, September 24, 2011
While I would like to think most people in the area are aware of this event (and coming!), I wanted to post this for others to see too.
Windy City BMW – Vintage Fest & Car Show 2011
Date: Saturday, September 24th, 2011
Location: ZF Services North America, LLC
Time: Noon until 4:00pm
Address: 777 Hickory Hill Drive, Vernon Hills, IL 60061.
Directions:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Vernon+Hills&state=IL&address=777+Hickory+Hill+Drive&zipcode=60061
This year’s Vintage Fest is once again being held at the beautiful ZF Services office in Vernon Hills Illinois. Yes, this is the same location as last year. We would like to think this year’s event will be even bigger and better.
Vintage Fest is always a great day for seeing a wide variety of BMWs. While Vintage Fest focuses on pre-1990 BMWs, ALL BMWs are invited to attend and enjoy the day, and need not be “show quality”.
BMW Motorcycles are welcome too, new or old.
Northern Illinois Food bank will be the charity of this event. Please bring some non-perishable food or cash to donate.
Brats, hotdogs, a veggie dish and refreshments will again be available this year. Meals will be $12.00 on site. As in past years, we will have People’s Choice voting on car show awards and giving away nice door prizes for attendees throughout the day. The car show categories for awards this year are listed below. Voting ballots will be distributed to entrants on the day of the show.
1) Best 2002 (since we usually have a wide variety of 2002’s)
2) Best E30, 1984 - 1991
3) Best Vintage BMW – Other (Non 2002 or E30 Bodystyle debut prior to 1990)
4) Best Newer BMW (Bodystyle debut 1990 and later)
5) Best Motorcycle
6) Longest Distance Traveled
A portion of the parking lot will be reserved for trading/selling parts. There will also be parking for unique non-BMWs in another part of the parking lot.
If you have any questions, please email Vince Strazzabosco at vintageday@windycitybmw.com or vstrazzabosco@yahoo.com

Hi Jacques,
Thanks for the info! That's a interesting one. And yes, that trailer does look delicate!

I've never seen a felt one, but I have always used the paper ones I got.

Ron at Prix Parts near St. Charles, IL rebuilt the Lucas starter in my Alfa van. Did a great job, too. He could probably do the generator as well as he is used to working on such things...

Depends on the condition of the body and interior.....silver is a nice color and the car does look pretty good. The 5 speed adds $1k or so to the price if it's done right. That it IS smogged makes it easier to sell in CA, too many are not smogged and it's much tougher to sell one that isn't. Sometimes it's worth paying a little extra if the car is nice and close....plus, he says OBO, so he's looking for offers.

I have a suction cup mount that I transfer from car to car. In my '02 I put it up on the windshield to the right of the rv mirror.

He's been trying to get rid of it for a long time. It needs too much work for that price, but it would be a good parts car for someone.
I'd rather spend 5k on a nice car than 500 on something like this.
vince

Actually, it looks like a pretty nice car, but then I'm partial to tis, as I have the ugly twin brother to your car.
The only question I'm sure others would be thinking of is whether there is any rust hiding out in the rockers, inner fenders, or shock towers that isn't easily visible. You did a great job of listing info and provided lots of pictures, so no need to ask for more.

This is pretty much the best site on the web to chase down 2002s....
Since you are in Chicago, feel free to also make contact with the folks at www.chivinmoto.com. Though they're pretty much a euro/jap, etc bike group, they are into vintage motos, period. They might also have some contacts, especially since Milwaukee isn't that far away (www.milvinmoto.com). If you're not already aware of them....
Good luck, nice to see the old ones still out there!

Need help, who is the owner and paint color?
in BMW 2002 and other '02
Posted
Riviera was my first guess, too. Not often you see a freshly painted car in Riviera, it is a nice color.
