  2. That is one of my gripes with auctions like this, they post a bunch of nice pictures of basically the same area of the car, and never good shots of important spots, like the underside, etc. even if they are in good shape. I think a serious buyer would be more likely to pass on an auction like this.

Yeah, it does look sort of ridiculous all tarted up like that. Neatly done, but looks too much like a rice racer wanna be.

    But I'm old....

  3. I called the seller Tuesday, interesting guy. He promised to send me pictures, and even though I emailed him through cl that night, I never got a response.

Hard to buy a car when the seller doesn't respond. And people wonder why I have only one 2002!

Oh well, now I don't have to sell anything to make room.

  4. Wow, talk about a blast from the past, indeed....

Welcome back to 2002 Land, Lisa!

Yes. I still have your calendar. )

And I still have the green ti, though it and I now live back in the Chicago area. Occasionally I cross paths with Rodney....

Good to hear from you and that you are well!

  5. About halfway down the page at the link below is some info on how the Weber "kits" were originally set up for some cars. The DCOE listing for the 1800 TISA might be a good baseline to start with.

    http://www.postdiluvian.org/~mason/moto/jetting.html

From what I remember, the 45s were usually meant more for a higher RPM engine, with bigger cam, exhaust, porting, etc. The linkage can also be suspect, does pedal travel match the throttle butterfly position well? Is half throttle really half throttle?

The carbs were intended to be used with the bell-shaped air horns, without these, airflow isn't as smooth and hesitation and bogging can occur. This can be treated to some degree with tuning, but makes it more difficult.

Lastly, the airflow with the air horns is also affected by having a filter or box-like something around them to eliminate the turbulence and enable the air to flow smoothly into the horns.

    Hope some of this helps,

  6. Wow....this is indeed beyond cool! I totally agree with the thought of trying to keep it as original as possible. Only the second NK I would be interesting in buying and making room in my garage for, makes a perfect fit with my collection of tis (Alcan Rally 2002ti, 318ti CS) and other BMWs but I suspect lots of others are interested in it too. Feel free to contact me if you think of selling it. So I'll be happy with my BMWs, old Dodge trucks, and a few oddballs.

Justin, Yale's car was not very original when he got it, and wasn't when I got it. If someone restored it to perfection, he'd be spinning in his grave. That you've done so much to it already and still drive it and track it, I'm sure he'd be proud and smiling where ever he is. Imagine the column he'd write about it now!

  7. When I first looked at the ad, all the engine and other interesting pictures were missing. Now they're back.

Why do people coat the engine compartment with black crud? And do I see some troweling of black stuff on the rockers?

Hmmm. Otherwise looks like a decent car?

  8. During that whole issue with Conan, there was a local Chicago comedian interviewed on the news (Tom Dreesen?) who pointed out that NBC made the deal to replace Jay with Conan, and while Jay didn't like it, he went ahead and tried to make his show work in it's new slot. What a lot of folks seemed to miss is that Conan just didn't bring in the viewers, both before he was given the Tonight Show, and especially after it. The Tonight Show bombed with Conan. Why NBC signed Conan to take over when Jay was #1 is hard to figure out, and why Conan would think that giving him the #1 slot would make him #1 is equally hard to figure out. Not a bad guy, but seemed pretty quirky at times.

I know a few people who have visited Jay's garage or filmed events with Jay, and like the others say, he's a very down to earth car guy, liable to run late for a meeting while talking cars with guys like us.

  9. Jim, sorry to hear about the guibo issues.

When I did my 5-speed conversion in 2002, the only way to do it was with the tabs. It has held up fine, still using the same guibo.

Washers may affect things a little. I once installed the bolts in the wrong direction on my 525i and had a noticeable vibration. Taking them out and putting them in the right direction made the vibration go away.

I've seen several different versions of the bracket, and I'd hazard a guess that Roadhog's on the right track in mentioning that the brackets may sag. I'd wonder if some may flex at times. I always wondered why BMW didn't use a bracket like that, maybe there was a reason?

Good luck with the tabs. I remember not having a whole lot of room to work in down there, but yours is cleaner....
