In true hack fashion...
Years ago in SF, a friend's 2002 got backed into a bit, mostly on the hood, and the fan was just touching the radiator. He had to go somewhere the next day, and there was no time to get new parts or visit a body shop.
I borrowed the strut tower stress bar from my car and bolted it onto his. I then removed his radiator. Using a scissors jack and severay pieces of 2x4s, I pushed the radiator mounting area of the inner grille back out enough to give room to drive the car. Put it all back together and it was fine. He never did get the hood damage fixed.
Good luck at Vintage, wish I was going!

Jon's car isn't THAT bad....LOL! I'd say just take care of it, keep it inside, maintain it, and yes, stash parts to fix it up so that when the time comes to pass it along in the family, you have the parts. Or if you suddenly become very wealthy with some tech idea.
JIm Gerock - I'd think the ti airbox mounts are mounted in very close to the same as the ti, if not the same. Probably made on the same assembly line....

Steve, you know far more than I will ever learn about computers and technology. Thanks for confirming that I did see something out of whack. I agree that my browser probably didn't cache things right. Little by little, you'll get all the problems fixed. Thanks for keeping on it!

Haven't been able to get the capture working, but maybe this will help explain it:
The text in " " below is now in black (or dark gray):

I'll also commend Steve and the gang for taking the huge step to build a new site that addressed a lot of the security issues and moved the site forward. Yes, we will have to get used to a few things, but it seemed like a lot of what was good about the old site seemed to have changed a bit too.
I also think they're listening to our complaints, as there are quite a few of us that have been around for a while bitching. Case in point, is today I logged on and oddly enough, the text of messages that was light gray and hard to read is now black and MUCH, MUCH easier to read. I didn't change anything on this site or on my computer. The white space also seems to have grown lightish gray borders on each side, which cuts back on the "glare" feeling.
So, thanks, whoever, whereever, that made some tweaks, it's working and is appreciated!

Actually, i have not had a chance to change anything since i do not get much of an explanation on where people see issues. Can you take a screen shot and let me know what you like and what you do not like. I have chosen a few things on purpose and i can explain them.
steve k."
When I logged on a few days ago, the text was lighter gray like this section is today:
"Advanced Member"
On each side of the screen, I see a very light gray border about 1" wide. It was also not visible in my earlier views.
And, around the Reply Box I now have a light blue border that I didn't have before.
No amount of tilting my laptop screen would change the lightness, and other sites like MyE28, BimmerForums, Yahoo, Craigslist, Linked In, etc came up looking the same as previously.
Does that help at all?

CD, you're not the only one, and I don't think it's age. Text is too light in contrast to the white screen, too much white space, too much going on in general. It reminds me of my complaints about new BMWs. I wish this'd go to a simpler, standardized regular format like BFC has, AlfaBB, etc.
I'm on quite a few other forums with no issues, and I'm finding this new redesign to be just plain difficult to work with, regardless of whether it's new or old. Everytime I come here, I'm not liking it. Hence, I'm probably not going to feel like spending as much time here.

As an old timer who was on the 2002 list many years ago, I'm happy to see this site, which has becoome the main 2002 site, upgrading, though I didn't have any issues with the old version. Well, maybe the search function didn't work well for me. I'm not an IT guy, though, but do know it was a lot of work, so my congrats to Steve and anybody else who was involved.
A couple of suggestions...
Maybe it's my old eyes or my laptop, but I find the light blue and light gray text on a white background to not be so easy to read. That combined with all the white space seems like too much....lightness? Of course, if there's a way I can customize it, I obviously didn't find it.
But then again, thanks for keeping the site going!

I am planning to go to Oktoberfest and have already registered and have a hotel for the event. I have not made my flight reservations yet, and would like to get out there in time for Legends of the Autobahn and Festorics.
I need to find a place to stay August 16 and 17th, the 18th to 24th I have a room at the Hilton Garden Inn.
Also need to find a rental car, unless someone has something they want driven gently from SFO to Monterey, around, and back to SFO, LOL.
I am not driving anything back, as I don't have the room and $$ for yet another toy. Thou shall not tempt....
Comments or suggestions welcome!

I used to know some guys who were into the Pro Street craze and drag racing, and saw them build up cars like this from many types of vehicles. They spent tens of thousands and the build quality was very good.
Problem came when they decided to do something else, it was really hard to get rid of the car for anything near what they had in it.
This guy could make more money if he converted it back to stock, LOL.

I'd agree with Creighton, get it all tuned to specs, add Techron or Seafoam, then take it for a nice long drive on a clear day to get the engine up to temperature for a long period of time. Then take compression and leakdown tests and see how they look. Also check the oil level and color before and after you take the trip.

Another place, where FAQer Dave Mason works, is The Werk Shop just north of Chicago. I'm sure others will also chime in as well.

I can think of a couple very nice, unmolested original 2002tis that sold in the past couple of years in the $15-20k range. There are about 25-30 2002tis known in North America. That number is not exact as some cars were confirmed as rust buckets and I don't know if they still exist.
This car....I did not have any records of it in the Registry I keep, so it's a first since Richard Poole started keeping tabs in the early '70s. Jon is right to ask about Canadian rust, given the car's age and the photographic evidence of rocker panel work. I would also wonder about the fender flares, are they steel or fiberglass?
The big question about this car is whether it was built or worked on at Alpina, or if it has some Alpina parts added, possibly later, when it was restored. I sent the seller an email asking if she might be able to dig up more information on the car's history, maybe even pictures before it was restored. This would really help establish the provenance for those interested in buying and give the car more value.

Hi Tom,
I was originally going to send you a note, but I only had one lousy pic. I asked my brother if he had more, and he sent me the others, which had the license plate too. They might be key in tracking it down, good luck!

A few that I've had...
T EYEEYE on a '74 tii
ONE EYE was on the '70 2002ti when I bought it
YALE R was the plate I put on Yale Rachlin's car as Yale himself threw away the same plates when he sold the car. Justin Gerry was nice enough to put the same plates on the car when he bought it from me and restored it.

Nicely done! Good luck!

What color was the car originally? From the trunk photos, it looks to have maybe been Nevada?
What it's worth depends on who is buying it and why. Someone might want it as a rat rod, someone else who likes early cars might want to restore it back to a more original condition and sell off the hi-po bits, and someone else might want to clean it up, make it look nicer.
The rust doesn't look to be that bad.
I'd guess between 1k to 3k. If there aren't many offers and he needs to sell, he may want to consider replacing the wheels/tires, Ireland bits and steering wheel with regular ones and sell them separately and the car for less.

Happy Birthday, Wolfgang! From yet another Nevada BMW, my recently acquired, long asleep '70 1600 project.
Not my truck or trailer, color is also off in the pic.

I find that racers have differing opinions than street drivers on which pads to use because they are used to having to slow down on the track from speed as quick as possible on a pretty regular basis.
On the street, it's not as regular, and the pads are muck more likely to be cold. Anticipating the stopping distance and pedal pressure is a much bigger issue on the street.
For my street driven beaters (E34s), whatever I have on hand seems to work well. If Blunt's selling them, they should be okay.

Look for the column on the left side, then look for the Dallas Trans Am 1970 link. There is a shot of a 2002 that was to run in the race (but was rained out), and may be others.
There are a LOT of races listed, and there might be some other 2002 or BMW shots. Then there are quite a few other cars and tracks of yore....

Just curious if the shop checked the surface of the head for warpage? The link below explains how to do this.

I forget what BMW specifies as the acceptable limit (.008?), maybe someone else knows it and can chime in?
