  1. it will be interesting to see where this lands.  for the price I am surprised the bottom was undercoated, what type of finish is on the underside of the hood?  did the ad mention when the mechanicals were done.  Certainly a beautiful tii, great stance etc etc - but is it a number 1 car?

I think I better add more insurance to mine - ha.  Great to see an 02 at a number that starts to make sense for collectors

  2. my 74 had the stock alternator and an amp under the rear seat - headlights are stock as well.  the amp was not working when I bought the car but I assume based off the age of the equipment that it worked fine for many years.  Amp was a 4 channel unit with rear parcel shelf speakers.  New Sony system with 4 new speakers works great until about 70mph with the windows down - then all bets are off,  lots of competition for the ear in an 02.

  3. does it pull hard to 100mph?  if so you are fine.  For me the AF gauge is just a guide.  From what I have read, Tii's like to run rich, I make adjustments at the mixture screw (verboten screw) and the cam inside the tuna can.  As you cover the hole with the cam in the tuna can, you will run richer - it becomes a dance, one move affects another and you will then have to readjust your AF ratio at idle.  little changes in the cam location or the mixture screw at the pump will have a big impact.  Little is the operative word.

I am by no means an expert - but I like to drink and read others posts -

Check for a big vacuum leak.  A couple weeks ago I took an intake runner off and didn't notice that one of the gaskets came off of one stud so it didn't seal when I reassembled it.  I got the same symptoms.

Given the length of time the car sat, I'd start by looking at the big rubber air hose that goes from the warm-up regulator to the intake log.  It is hard to get to and tends to be ignored; if it is split or not fully attached you'll have a big air leak.  You should look at the brake booster hose and check valve, too.

+1 - had the same thing happen to me on my tii

  6. I have tested my cold start valve on my 74 tii and I am not 100% sure it is working properly.  Fuel pressure is over 30 and it comes on when it should, but the fuel comes out in a weak steady stream while I crank it over.  There is no spray to speak of.  Is this normal?  There seems to be an abundance of fuel as well.

I tried the search function and have read many threads, just need confirmation that it is OK or time to replace $$$

    thanks

  7. I was lucky - I cleaned the underside with some type of caustic chemical that took off everything but the paint.  I wire brushed the few small surface rust areas and treated them with POR 15 then top-coated with body color.  6 months later and every year since, i spray the bottom with waxoyl - so far so good

  8. What I find funny, Mike, is that I wouldn't hesitate -- back in those days -- to drive an '02 from southeast Pennsylvania to Rochester, New York, in the middle of the winter, knowing full well that I'd hit AT LEAST one, maybe more, major snow storms over a typical 4 or 5 day trip. Youth? Stupidity? Thrill seeking? Or, in the '70's, did an '02 simply feel at least as safe as any other car -- before massive SUV's roamed the earth and upped the ante by increasing highway speeds? Today I'd be all over the Weather Channel before I drove my daily drivers -- both with AWD, one with Hakkepellitta's, the other with Blizzaks -- on a similar trip.

    Regards,

    Steve

great post - it is exactly how it was in the 70's - jump in and go.  maybe i need to rethink my big SUV, too bad my 02 isn't made out of aluminum - heck, I had a ski rack on my 68 2002

  9. i had a 68 2002 purchased in 72.  Living in Boston at the time, foreign cars were "around" and specialty  garages would deal with our repairs.  I cant imagine living anywhere but the East or West coast and driving a "foreign car" in the 60's or early 70's.

  10. when I was much younger, I would buy $100 cars and drive the crap out of them.  My favorite was a $100 Peugot that i drove until none of the lights worked and the engine has a horrible knock in it.  this was after a trip from Ct to NH, well over 200 miles and I though nothing of it until it started snowing and I realized the wipers weren't working - oh what fun

I love to see an old beater on the road, what was common place 30 years ago is a lease payment now and they are few and far between
