A few months back I was in Europe and came across this magazine "Old Timer Market", June 2012 edition, with an article for Alpina's 50 year anniversary. I don't speak German, so can't translate the article, but the pictures are plenty fun to look at. MojoJoy: On the third image you can see a photo of the type of air box now sitting in your garage somewhere. Pretty cool.

I agree, i'm pretty sad to see SPEED's coverage coming to an end. I've heard that the SKY coverage in Europe is really good, but honestly, between practice, qualifying, and then the race I think that's actually enough for me. Here's to hoping that NBC keeps about the same level/type of coverage, but time will tell. Curious to see if Bob Varsha will make the jump too, but seems somewhat unlikely as he does so much other stuff for SPEED. Being the geek that I am, I really enjoy Steve Matchett's insights and also have enjoyed his "Chalk Talk" sessions on the web site; just amazing to see the lengths these teams go to and the technologies they employ.

Yes, the giddyup is "real." It's nothing too complicated and no write-up exists. The letters are just old Letraset sticky letters bought from an art supply store. Those were then stuck to the back of a piece of translucent red plastic bought from Tap Plastic and cut to shape. Create your own slogan, and Voila!!

Rocan. Yes, I've been running MS2 since installing the stroker motor about four years ago now. It has worked very well for me although I know there are still gains and improvements to be made, I've just not dedicated the time to learning all the functions and ins 'n outs. The ITB's are 45mm TWM unit that so far have worked very well.

On October 28th, my car turns exactly 40 years old. Very cool I think. I bought the car 8 years ago, and never could have imagined what a great experience ownership would be. I've rebuilt pretty much the entire car in that time, each year ticking off one project or another. When I bought the car I'd never so much as changed a set of spark plugs, but am proud to say I've done pretty much everything to this car with my own two hands (with the exception of the paint) with the occasional generous assistance of various FAQers, notably Curt Ingraham and Cris Padagas through the years. A few months ago I finally got the ITBs installed, and then just in the past couple of weeks got one of Lee's old CF air boxes mounted (thanks Daniel!!) it sounds fantastic, and I love the contrast of old-school and the modern CF box. Who knows what will be next, but something will rise to the top I'm sure...

I'm curious to know why one would choose to mill down the S14 crank (which I believe is hardened) as opposed to just boring out the M10 lower timing chain cover. I had the latter done by Terry Tinney and it was something like a $50 job and would seem much less risky than messing with a hardened crank. Is it so that you can use the stock M10 pulley?

If there is fluid in the booster, it's because the MC is leaking. The booster, when operating properly, should be dry inside. You can simply unbolt the MC from the booster and pull it away a little bit to get a peak in there to see what's up. You won't even have to bleed the brakes afterward. If you need to replace the MC, it's not that bad of a job, but it's best to have a friend help with the bleeding, or invest in a power bleeder (a great buy at about $50 in my opinion.) Keep in mind the brake fluid is nasty on paint, so be careful to keep it off the paintwork if at all possible.

I had one of the Bav Auto "Ultimate" covers a while back and honestly was pretty underwhelmed with it. Within the first year the elasticity to the band on the bottom was completely gone and I found it seeped more water through than I expected. Just recently I got one of the "Noah" covers through California Car Cover and I'm much more impressed with it. Yes, it's a bit bulkier and more expensive, but the cut is far superior and it really is a nice snug fit.

Like other twins that we might expect you to post about, one sits a little higher than the other. Very nice though.

I believe they will work fine yes assuming they are the standard round 1 1/2"-ish cross bars (don't quote me on that diameter..)

I've got a couple of things that I'd like to move along. First is the center piece for a three piece dash. It has a crack on either end but other than that is in fine shape. This item is free if picked up. I'm in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Secondly, I have a pair of Yakima Viper roof top bike mounts, locks are not included. These are in good condition, just don't fit our new cars cross beams, so off they go. $80 for the pair. Does anyone have photos of recent Esty kits? I have one of her early ones and have never been super happy with how it fits. Curious to see how the newer patterns lay down, where the edge trim is, etc..

Where about in the bay area are you?

After searching a few different companies I ended up with Farmer's. The key reasons were as follows: Doesn't require it to be in a locked garage. Would do an agreed value policy. Will offer comprehensive coverage, so if I screw up I'm still covered, as well as theft, etc... Will cover "driving school" track days as long as I'm not racing.

The insurance isn't super cheap, but I like having each of the above elements and I wasn't able to find that combination elsewhere, most notably the driving school component.

Note that I've not had to file a claim to date, so who knows how they'll be if/when the time comes. Hopefully I never find out.

If their recently discussed optimistic Ebay ads are any guideline, I would say that Select Classics would say that this car has been "closely inspected and approved by five independent inspectors."
