  1. A bit OT, I know, but I'm so saddened to hear that Mark has not kept Silicon Garage alive, even in spirit. I feel fortunate to have known Curt, and if there is one thing he absolutely was, it was honest and giving, through and through. To hear that someone else (who in all my previous encounters seemed like a really nice guy) has not only closed up the business, but also left some customers hanging, is just really disappointing. Mark, if you're out there, I hope you have the opportunity and will to make things right purely out of respect for Curt, even if you don't have the desire or time to carry on with the business.

    ArdenK: The air box was produced by Lee Vuong of Massive Brakes some years back. I believe he only made a dozen or so of them and that was it. I was lucky enough to pick one up from a fellow FAQer a couple of years back. The ITB's are 45mm TWM units. 45's are on the large side for a 2002, but since my car has the bottom end from an E30 M3 it has a slightly higher displacement (2.3L) so figured the extra size might be fun. I haven't been disappointed with them.

  3. I don't have a build thread on here, no. Attached are a couple of photos to at least give an idea of what I've got but will stop short of a full description as I'm still not sure if I want to go through with it at all. BAT is certainly a place which has come to mind, but I think they are pretty picky about their exclusive features and I'm not sure if a 2002 will cut the mustard, so to speak.

     

    Thanks for the input guys. To be clear, I'm not requesting value estimates, rather tools to help me assign a good value and good places to list.

  4. After almost 10 great years, I am considering selling my '73 2002. My mind still isn't fully made up yet, honestly I thought I'd keep the car until I was lowered into my grave. However, priorities and times change, and sometimes this creates a shift in thinking. Time will tell...

     

    So, since my car is pretty far from stock, I'm curious to know what tools folks have used successfully to help set an appropriate selling price. I've been perusing the completed listings on Ebay, checking Craigslist a bit, and also looked at the Hagerty pricing tool, although the latter isn't very helpful with a modified car.

     

    Also, I'm curious to hear where people have had good success selling their car. Craigslist doesn't really interest me, and I'm a bit nervous of an auction format on Ebay also. Obviously it would get posted here on the FAQ, but would like to hear where else have done well for people (I'm in the San Francisco area.)

  5. This past week I was in Germany for work. One evening I was invited to a dinner party at a place called Classic Remise, in Dusseldorf. As we pulled into the parking lot, I was already in a good mood as we were just a little way behind what looked to be a '72-73 1602, although the grills looked to be from an earlier model (I was unable to talk with the owner to get more details.)

     

    From what I could gather, Classic Remise is an interesting blend of independently run restoration and service shops, garages rented by local club chapters (Citroen, Morgan, etc..) as well as a storage and sales facility for both private and professional collectors/dealers. My gut guess would be that there were no less than 300 cars in the "collection", everything from Porsches (the most prevalent car on site being the 911), Mercs, a couple of Cobras, Alfas, Astons, Ferraris, and just about everything in between. Below are a few of my personal highlights, but this is truly just showing the very tip of the iceberg. A truly amazing establishment, and well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

  6. I can't speak to those on EBay as I'm not familiar with them. I'm sure if you search ITB's you'll find some good info on this site. I run TWM's and am very happy with them. As you suggest, great tunability and a nice sound to boot. I've run them both with an airbox and with screen filters (similar length airhorns with each, they are just recessed out of site in the airbox), seems to be absolutely zero difference in hp or torque.

  7. Alright, I'll add my modest experiences onto this.When I first bought my car almost 10 years ago it had:

    Once overbored bottom end

    Ported E12 head with a 292 cam

    9.5:1 CR

    MSD ignition

    Weber 38/38 downdraft

    The previous owner had put it on a Dynojet dyno and the results are attached here. You can see that peak hp was 99 and peak torque was 111. Not that bad actually. Obviously these numbers are at the wheels, so perhaps something like 120-125hp at the wheels??

     

    A while back I rebuilt the motor and now it has a 2.3L bottom end from an S14 but still uses the identical head as before, no additional work has been done to it other than fresh valve guides. I'm also now running 45mm ITB's and Megasquirt EFI. I finally put it on a dyno a little while back to do some tuning and that dyno sheet is also attached. As you'll see, peak hp was 131 and torque was 139, so perhaps 160hp-ish at the wheels?? This was also a Dynojet, but obviously at a different location, very different days, different operators, etc... Not empirical of course, but fun food for thought perhaps.

  8. I've just been ordering them directly from Porterfield's website. I've had technical questions a couple of times, and each time I have had good and fast responses, so in my mind they have earned the business, so I give it to them directly. For a 2002 you'll be looking at around $300 for a full set of pads/shoes. I can't comment on dust level and have never used them on a street car, but perhaps others can help with this.

  9. We run Porterfield R4E (E for Endurance) compound pads in our LeMons race car (admittedly not an 02) and they are fantastic. Previously we had been going through one set, sometimes two, of Textar pads per race weekend, but the Porterfields have now successfully done three full weekends and have so much more stopping power than all previous pads we've run. I would buy them again without a second thought, the increased initial cost has more than paid for itself.

  10. I agree with Kidaster and Mlytle: get a strut brace with a higher center section. Mine is the S14 one from Ireland. SUPER tight fit both to the airbox and the hood, but it does indeed fit. Excuse the crappy iPhone photo, especially next to the beautiful ones of "Stuff"

For what it's worth, I've had two semi hopped-up motors in my 2002, both of which have been dyno'd (admittedly at different times, on different dynos, with different operators, so take the numbers with a grain of salt.) However, hopefully you can at least use the numbers directionally as I do believe your initial goals may be a bit optimistic with the set-up you suggested. People will spout off about all sorts of HP and torque numbers, but I don't believe too many of them unless they have actually been established on a dyno. Note I'm not suggesting that fun is all about dyno numbers, merely that I'm cautious of claims people make without quantifiable back-up. 

    Motor 1: Weber 38/38, 292 cam, ported head, 10:1 pistons (supposedly, but I'm not quite convinced.) HP and Torque at the wheels were both right around 105.

    Motor 2: 45mm ITB's, Megasquirt EFI, 2.3L bottom end from an S14 (block, crank, and rods), 9.5:1 pistons, same head as on motor 1. HP and Torque again almost identical at about 135-140 if I remember correctly.

     

    Both set-ups have really nice low end torque if you are willing to give it a little welly as they say. Totally agree that you should find a couple you should drive in your area. Regardless of dyno numbers, a nicely set-up 2002 is a blast to drive. Best of luck.

  12. Barrosco: No, I've not deleted the booster. I have a tii booster hiding underneath that airbox which is just shoe-horned in there. A very nice piece of design and fabrication by Lee Vuong of Massive Brakes fame some years ago. I also had to re-work the manifold to have parallel faces which in essence points the ITBs or carb's higher than they would ordinarily, giving me the space the get both height over the booster as well as get back some extension onto the airhorns.

  13. On my 2002 I did pretty much all the big mechanical stuff first (over the course of 5 years or so) and then the body pretty much last. I recently picked up a '65 Alfa that needs a full restoration, and I've decided to follow the same path. I think my basic reasoning is that I first want to truly understand how the car needs to be set-up mechanically to drive the way I want it to. Do I need to roll the fender lips to run the wheels and ride height I want? If I want to tidy up the engine bay a bit are there holes that should be welded shut or obsolete brackets to be removed? My plan, at least right now, is to get it set-up mechanically first then drive it looking all ratty for a while before getting into the body. Just another perspective...

  14. On a recent visit to Fantasy Junction in Emeryville I was pretty smitten with these two cars. They have boat-loads of drool worthy metal there, but these two really struck a chord for me, despite being far from the most expensive in the showroom and both completely impractical.

    Given that my '02 is sort of completed, and I evidently have similar taste to some of the previous posters in this thread, I was looking for a new project so picked up a very needy '65 Alfa Giulia Sprint GT a couple of months ago.     I'm already somewhat dreading the day that it's done as I'm sure I will ultimately be faced with the question of which to keep, the '02 or the Alfa (I also have another car as my daily driver.) I just don't think I can justify having three cars.
