Radio Wiring

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. You may remember when I asked how to mount up a radio on my 2002 a few months ago. Well, I've just bought and installed the components, and I cannot figure out which wire from the 2002 is "constant 12v supply", and what is "ignition/variable supply". On the head unit these are color coded yellow and red, but no matter how I connect them up, the radio won't turn on. I'm sure that there was a radio in my car in some point in time (antennae on top, perfectly placed ground wire), but I can't figure out which cables I connect to the head unit. Can anybody help me?[/b]

1st, you're going to need a voltmeter to probe connectors under the dash. what year is your car? I have a 74 so I know what connectors are available in that year and may make connecting a little easier

under the dash, look for wires that dead end in connectors. those are probably where you will find a 12 volt source. with no key in the ignition, probe and look for a lead that reads 12 V - that's your constant on 12 V. then with the key in and turned to ON, the position just before cranking the starter, look for other leads that read 12 V - that's your ignition only 12 V. besides under the dash, look behind the console for a lead that may feed the radio HTH

If you have a 4way flasher switch in the center console, you should also have a hot lead ending in a female spade lug connector attached. Feel back along the wiring that ends at the 4way switch, this is the factory termination for the radio. Havinf said that, you might be better off noise wise if you wire directly to battery for both hot and neg connections with an inline fuse near the positive battery takeoff point.
