Different Spindle Sizes: 1600 & 2002?

Hello folks......

I sent off a couple of nice strut assemblies to a fellow FAQ'er. He's working on, I believe......a 1600 and unfortunately, I don't know which year.

The strut assemblies I sent were I'm sure.......off of a parted out 2002 or possible just came in a "package deal" with a parts car I purchased a couple of years back.

Below you see his reply to me. I don't have a clue? Can anyone help? Did I perhaps, send him tii struts that I didn't know I had? Was there really a difference in 1600 & 2002's with respect to spindle size? Maybe there was a switch over between early 1600's and later one. I'm S-T-U-M-P-E-D and would have liked to have gotten this fellow the parts he needed.

Any comments would be really useful.

"I also checked the spindle against the ones on the 1600 and they are different in size. The ones on the 1600 on the inside bearing 27mm the ones you sent are 29mm so there is two sizes for the cars and I don't know whether the 1600 is different then the 2002. Can you find out why there is a difference?"

Thanks,

Jerry

Early 1600-2 had a different front wheel inner bearing than the rest of the non-tii 02. I'm not sure when the "early" stuff ended, BMW ETK & the bearing catalogs don't agree.

Bearing ID # are visible on the parts, here's what markings should be there, along with what they represent. What's curious is how some of the cars appear to have fractional inch size spindles (1600-2 = 1 1/16", tii have 1 1/4" & 3/4") while others appear straight metric (std 02 29 mm).

Early 1600-2 inner sets are marked:

L44649 cone / L44610 cup

Cone bore=26.987 mm (1.0625")

Cup OD=50.292 (1.9800")

27.1 kN Load rating

Later standard 02 inners:

L45449 / L45410

Cone bore=29.000 (1.1417")

Cup OD= 50.292 (1.9800")

27.7 kN load

Both the above have these outers

LM11749 / LM11710

Cone bore=17.462 (0.6875")

Cup OD=39.878 (1.5700")

22.9 kN

02 tii bearings are larger & rated for higher load, inners are marked

LM67048 / LM67010

Cone bore=31.750 (1.2500")

Cup OD=59.131 (2.3280")

36.5 kN

02 tii outers are

LM11949 / LM11910

Cone bore=19.050 mm (0.750")

Cup OD=45.237 (1.7810")

30.6 kN

Yes, there are diffrences in spindle sizes.

All 1600-2 and 2002s up until about mid 69 had larger spindle diameters at the inner bearing area. They are 2mm larger in diameter from the later cars. They are not as big, though, as the tii spindles, which are 4mm larger in diameter.

So the early cars :

1600s from 1966-mid69 and

2002s from 1968-mid 69 had these +2mm larger spindles. These cars were also equipped with the single piston brake calipers.

A lot of e-bay and parts application listing lump all 1600s and 2002s together and list that they all use the same bearings. This is obviously wrong. The inner bearings for the +2mm spindles are difficult to find. Amazingly, I found them at Pep-Boys of all places. I have a hunch that they may be the same size as those used on the Neu Klasse sedans but I'm not sure. Somebody will have to verify this.
