engine and drivetrain I.D. on fuel lines??

Got to thinking about using the metal fuel return line on the bottom of my '76 as the fuel supply. Read where a couple others have done this. Last night I took the crusted hose off the end of the return line in the engine bay and measured it up (appears to be 1/4 inch ID) Then, I took the fuel line off the fuel pump to see if the ID of the line from the firewall to the pump was the same and it looked like it was a bigger ID. Was I seeing things at 10pm or what? Will the 1/4 inch ID stretch out to fit onto the fuel pump?

Any help is appreciated.

that 5/16 will be too big on the old return line down low. Will a hose clamp snug it up sufficiently down there? Or can I stretch the 1/4 to fit on the fuel pump?
