Pops and pings...

The exhaust system on my 1971 2002 is always popping and pinging after warm-up (it has a header BTW). Is this because somehow the system is under some stress of some sort? Possible cures? As always, thanks in advance for any sage advice out there in 02 Land.

Do you mean pops and pings when you downshift? Or pops and pings like the exhaust is rubbing up against something?

If it's rattling against something fix it. If it's popping on downshift that means you are pulling fuel into the exhaust and it's burning in the exhaust. It's an ignition and tuning issue. Also some suggested to me that if there is a leak in the exhaust you can be pulling fresh air into the exhaust which will cause things to pop and burn abnormally.

my e30 does this and ive traced it to the resonator. as it expands from heat it pops and makes annoying noise. all i can say is its making less and less noise as i get more miles on it. im not sure if i have a loose baffle or what but it seems to be going away with use
