Before anybody takes my bad advice and tries to use a VDO idle valve:

The E30 type VDO idle valve does not really work very well with the PWM Idle circuit modification as outlined in the MSIII manual. The circuit was designed to drive a Bosch or Ford type idle valve. I will be switching to a Bosch valve soon myself.

LOL.... Thanks! I have two that will be going on ebay soon then!

It's also a little awkward to fit down in there right?

EDIT: errr... on second thought. Why does it not work well? Air flow? compatability?

I'm not exactly sure why, But what is happening with mine (and I have tried 3 different valves), is that it sort of acts lke an on/off valve instead of following a gradual closing curve. It might have to do with the pulse frequency.

It will be open until PWM dutycycle drops below about 70%, then it will close down.

You *can* run the VDO valve and have it act like an on/off solenoid, but you'd be alot happier with a Bosch I think. (my spares VDO's are going on ebay as well)

Hope I get mine up before you do or else mine will be worth half!

I plugged it into an E30 (the VDO one) and it worked as it should - gradual. I see how the "on/off" would be a problem - a big one. Personally I like the E21 aux. air valve because of it's simplicity but it's so darn ugly and messy. I want to have something neat, clean and out of sight.

Which bosch are you going to go with? Also is there a resistor that could be added to the wiring to lessen the on/off effect? I didn't think of it at the time but what about measuring the E30 system and matching MS to that? Is it just that the VDO is litterally more solonoid like rather than heat/bi-metallic spring like (the former being the on/off and the latter being the gradual)?

Thanks for posting this - you've saved me some trouble down the line because after seeing your post I really was planning on using the VDO.

Yeah, I did try a couple of differnet resistors 8ohm and 20ohm, and a few different flyback diodes as well, but nothing really helped.

I am going with a Bosch valve that came from a mecedes, but supposedly that "family" of Bosch rotary-type valves all take the same input, and are known to work.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
