2002Tii radiator

Recommended Posts

Is there a overflow tank for the radiator? I just noticed that the opening right next to the rad cap. There is no tube, just a little spout where coolant leaks out.

No, they are supposed to have a rubber tube that goes from the little spout under the neck over to the side of the radiator, & it runs about 1/2 way down the side of the radiator, there are small metal tabs that holds the tube there. If I remember right, an overflow tank won't work like you think, if the system gets so hot as to push water out, the cap allows that, but it won't pull water back in.

2002 vintage cars did not have expansion tanks and do not need them. Supposed to have some air volume in the radiator (do not try to keep it full, it will keep pushing out the excess) to act as the expansion volume. Let fluid push out and monitor the level in the radiator periodically. It will stop at the level it likes. Remember that level, as that's how full you are to keep it. Adding more will not cool the car any better, it will just keep you buying wasted antifreeze.

Newer cars are more limited on ratiator size and are filled completely wiith the expansion tank offering the expansion volume. Each time the are warmed up, some fluid pushes out to the expansion tank and on cool down, it is sucked back in because the tube takes suction off the bottom of the expansion tank.
